TL;DR: This paper systematically reviews the development and deployment of smart energy meters, including smart electricity meters, smart heat meters, and smart gas meters, to provide insights and guidelines regarding the future development of smart meters.
Abstract: The significant increase in energy consumption and the rapid development of renewable energy, such as solar power and wind power, have brought huge challenges to energy security and the environment, which, in the meantime, stimulate the development of energy networks toward a more intelligent direction. Smart meters are the most fundamental components in the intelligent energy networks (IENs). In addition to measuring energy flows, smart energy meters can exchange the information on energy consumption and the status of energy networks between utility companies and consumers. Furthermore, smart energy meters can also be used to monitor and control home appliances and other devices according to the individual consumer’s instruction. This paper systematically reviews the development and deployment of smart energy meters, including smart electricity meters, smart heat meters, and smart gas meters. By examining various functions and applications of smart energy meters, as well as associated benefits and costs, this paper provides insights and guidelines regarding the future development of smart meters.

TL;DR: A comprehensive security understanding of the SGs framework, attacks scenarios, detection/protection methods, estimation and control strategies from both communication and control viewpoints are addressed.
Abstract: Smart grids (SGs), which can be classified into a class of networked distributed control systems, are designed to deliver electricity from various plants through a communication network to serve individual consumers. Due to the complexity of environments, the distribution of the spatial locations and vulnerability of the communication networks, cyber security emerges to be a critical issue because millions of electronic devices are interconnected via communication networks throughout critical power facilities. This paper addresses a comprehensive security understanding of the SGs framework, attacks scenarios, detection/protection methods, estimation and control strategies from both communication and control viewpoints. Also, some potential challenges and solution approaches are discussed to deal with the threat issues of SGs. At last, some conclusions and highlight future research directions are presented.

TL;DR: This paper develops a near real-time algorithm for identifying multiple line outages at the affordable complexity of solving a sparse signal reconstruction problem via either greedy steps or coordinate descent iterations.
Abstract: Fast and accurate unveiling of power-line outages is of paramount importance not only for preventing faults that may lead to blackouts, but also for routine monitoring and control tasks of the smart grid, including state estimation and optimal power flow. Existing approaches are either challenged by the combinatorial complexity issues involved and are thus limited to identifying single and double line-outages or they invoke less pragmatic assumptions such as conditionally independent phasor angle measurements available across the grid. Using only a subset of voltage phasor angle data, the present paper develops a near real-time algorithm for identifying multiple line outages at the affordable complexity of solving a sparse signal reconstruction problem via either greedy steps or coordinate descent iterations. Recognizing that the number of line outages is a small fraction of the total number of lines, the novel approach relies on reformulating the DC linear power flow model as a sparse overcomplete expansion and leveraging contemporary advances in compressive sampling and variable selection. This sparse representation can also be extended to incorporate available information on the internal system and more general line-parameter faults. Analysis and simulated tests on 118-, 300-, and 2383-bus systems confirm the effectiveness of identifying sparse power line outages.
