Abstract: This chapter presents general features of modernity that social theory has pointed to but inadequately thematized and that help to provide a much stronger sociological foundation for grasping some of the phenomena to which postmodern thought calls our attention. Modern political and economic affairs are distinguished by the increasing frequency, scale, and importance of indirect social relationships. The reproduction of embodied but social sensibilities, habituses, is altered as social life comes more and more to be coordinated through indirect relationships. Recognizing the role of indirect relations and imagined communities provides a way to understand the increasing split between everyday life and large-scale systemic integration, thus potentially informing and improving Jurgen Habermas's account of social versus system integration. Perhaps the most important transformation of everyday life in the modern era has been the sharpening and deepening of a split between the world of direct interpersonal relationships and the mode of organization and integration of large-scale social systems.

TL;DR: Among the communities of critical race theorists and its detractors in education, there has been an apparent rift as to what theoretical construct best contributes to the social justice project in education as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Among the communities of critical race theorists and its detractors in education, there is an apparent rift as to what theoretical construct best contributes to the social justice project in education. Conferences and meetings have served as quasi‐battle grounds for theorists, activists and scholars to go back and forth about what theoretical construct has the greatest bearing on educational praxis. Debate notwithstanding, the following document argues critical race theory (CRT hereafter) as a viable theoretical construct to address issues of social justice in education. In so doing, the following document couches the discussion in three tasks. The first is to identify the contributions of CRT in education. Second, the document argues for a closer read of the theoretical construct and its subsequent application. The concluding task will be an example of how the points of contention and compliance can be located through an example (in this case narrative) of a school with a social justice agenda at its cen...

TL;DR: This article examined student participation in sport education from the perspective of those students' social agenda using a combination of fieldnotes, interview, and videotape data and found that the student social system often conflicts with the teacher's agenda.
Abstract: This paper examines student participation in units of sport education from the perspective of those students’ social agenda. Using a combination of fieldnotes, interview, and videotape data, four major themes emerged: (a) a change in the way students socialized during class (with a particular emphasis on the development of teamwork and cooperation), (b) a change in the opportunities for personal and social development (including leadership skills and cooperation), (c) a change in the nature of competition (where winning became more important and led to greater student effort), and (d) a change in how students viewed their learning within their physical education class. While in regular physical education contexts, the student social system often conflicts with the teacher’s agenda, in this study, data suggested that because students were placed in both instructional and managerial leadership roles, these typically teacher-driven task systems became an integral part of the student social system.
