Abstract: Sodium hypophosphite (SHP) is widely used as an effective catalyst for the esterification reaction of cellulose with 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA). However, catalysts containing phosphorus cause significant shade changes in dyed fabrics because of their reductive nature, and the effluents containing phosphorus cause eutrophication in rivers and lakes. Hence, their commercial application as catalysts in textile processing is limited. In this study sodium propionate and its catalytic activities as a nonphosphorous catalyst were investigated. The evidence for esterification and crosslinking of cellulose with BTCA in the presence of sodium propionate was shown by an improved wrinkle recovery angle and durable press rating of treated fabrics. The presence of ester groups in the treated fabrics was confirmed by FTIR analysis. The performance of sodium propionate as a catalyst for BTCA was comparable to that of SHP. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 81: 654–661, 2001

Abstract: Aims: To determine the effect of a range of supplements on the bioconversion of linoleic acid to conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) by Bifidobacterium breve NCIMB 702258 in reconstituted skim milk (RSM). Results: Seven supplements (yeast extract, casein hydrolysate, tryptone, l-cysteine hydrochloride, sodium acetate, sodium butyrate and sodium propionate) were identified as increasing the bioconversion of linoleic acid to c9, t11 CLA. Using these supplements, the percentage bioconversion of linoleic acid (0·35 mg ml−l) to the c9, t11 CLA isomer was elevated from 15·5 ± 1·1% in 20% RSM (w/v) to 48·1 ± 2·2% in the supplemented RSM. Through additional supplementation of 20 mg m1−1 inulin and optimization of inoculum and linoleic acid concentration, the percentage bioconversion to c9, t11 CLA was increased to 55·0 + 3·2%. Conclusions: Through supplementation, the concentration of CLA produced by bifidobacteria in RSM can be increased to levels comparable to those observed in the synthetic medium cys-MRS. Significance and Impact of the Study: The impact of 22 supplements on the production of the c9, t11 CLA isomer by the strain B. breve NCIMB 702258 in milk has been determined. The results provide an understanding of the factors, which influence CLA production by bifidobacteria in RSM.

Abstract: In rat pinealocytes, activation of alpha 1-adrenergic receptors leads to increases in intracellular pH (pHi). In this study, the role of pHi on adrenergic regulation of cyclic nucleotide accumulation was investigated using ammonium chloride, which increased pHi, and sodium propionate, which reduced pHi. Ammonium chloride significantly enhanced the norepinephrine-stimulated adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) and guanosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cGMP) responses, while it selectively potentiated the isoproterenol (ISO)-stimulated cGMP response. Reduction of pHi by sodium propionate reduced the norepinephrine-stimulated cGMP accumulation by 70%, and its effect on the ISO-stimulated cGMP response was stimulatory. Treatment with sodium propionate effectively neutralized the enhancing effects of ammonium chloride on the adrenergic-stimulated cAMP and cGMP responses. These effects of sodium propionate and ammonium chloride on cyclic nucleotides appeared to reflect altered rate of synthesis, and they were also in part secondary to changes in intracellular Ca2+. Our findings indicate that the receptor-mediated changes in pHi may play an integral part in the adrenergic regulation of cAMP and cGMP production in rat pinealocytes.
