TL;DR: An overview of the goals, design, and status of this hardware/software complex, and some of the research problems raised and analytic problems solved in the course of its construction are described.
Abstract: In the Summer of 1971 a project was initiated at CMU to design the hardware and software for a multi-processor computer system using minicomputer processors (i.e., PDP-11's). This paper briefly describes an overview (only) of the goals, design, and status of this hardware/software complex, and indicates some of the research problems raised and analytic problems solved in the course of its construction.

TL;DR: In this article, a multi-tier modular software, and plug-in extendable, architecture for image capture and processing systems is presented, where a third-party customer can write and install a software plugin into the application layer so as to enhance or modify the behavior of the image capturing and processing system without any required knowledge of the hardware platform, communication protocols and/or user interfaces.
Abstract: An image capture and processing system supports a multi-tier modular software, and plug-in extendable, architecture. The image capture and processing system can be realized as an image-capturing cell phone, a digital camera, a video camera, mobile computing terminal and portable data terminal (PDT), provided with suitable hardware platform, communication protocols and user interfaces. A third-party customer can write and install a software plug-in into the application layer so as to enhance or modify the behavior of the image capture and processing system without any required knowledge of the hardware platform, communication protocols and/or user interfaces.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for protecting distributed software which relies on a unique factor such as an accessible serial number or the generation of a profile or fingerprint of the computer of the user which is entered individually and/or with a random factor to generate a unique first key which will differ for different computers.
Abstract: A method is provided for protecting distributed software which relies on a unique factor such as an accessible serial number or the generation of a profile or fingerprint of the computer of the user which is entered individually and/or with a random factor to generate a unique first key which will differ for different computers. The first key is sent to a processing center which then generates a second key. The user applies the second key which compares the unique and/or random factors. If the comparison matches, the first and second keys are used in an algorithm in the software to generate a decrypting key permitting the customer to purchase the selected program(s).

TL;DR: In this article, a method for remote installation of software over a computer network allows a user to interactively select each remote computer system for software installation, or to provide a file containing a list of all remote computer systems.
Abstract: A method for remote installation of software over a computer network allows a user to interactively select each remote computer system for software installation, or to provide a file containing a list of all remote computer systems. Before attempting to install the software, the method ensures that the remote system can be reached through the network, that the remote system has the capability of running processes remotely, that the remote system has all the commands necessary to perform the installation, that the remote system has the correct hardware and software to support the installation, and that sufficient disk space exists on the remote computer system for the installation. The method then combines all files that are being remotely installed into a single data stream, sends this single data stream over the network to the remote computer system, and separates the data stream into the original files on the remote system.
