Abstract: Cloud computing paradigm has become the solution to provide good service quality and exploit economies of scale. However, the management of such elastic resources, with different Quality-of-Service (QoS) combined with on-demand self-service, is a complex issue. This paper proposes an approach driven by Service Level Agreement (SLA) for optimizing the capacity planning for Cloud applications. The main challenge for a service provider is to determine the best trade-off between profit and customer satisfaction. In order to address this issue, we follow a queueing network proposal and present an analytical performance model to predict Cloud service performance. Based on a utility function and a capacity planning method, our solution calculates the optimal configuration of a Cloud application. We rely on autonomic computing to adjust continuously the configuration. Simulation experiments indicate that our model i) faithfully captures the performance of Cloud applications for a number of workloads and configurations and ii) successfully keeps the best trade-off.

Abstract: An enterprise software system connected to multi-tenant hosted software offered in a cloud computing environment having the capacity to serve a large number of users with a small number of servers, and means for collecting and reporting statistically relevant information based on an aggregation of the data within the multi-tenant database. The integrated software modules include modules for IT management, financial operations, portfolio management, project management, project budget management, resource management, and operations management. The system permits user-specific lexicography mapped to a Master terminology; ranking projects on financial and non-financial indicators; presentation of a dynamic dashboard of proposals and approved projects; provision of a service catalogue that incorporates budget and asset management processes; a multi-tenanted database that enables users to share data management resources while maintaining their data in confidence; and providing aggregate IT data for competitive intelligence purposes.

Abstract: Cloud Computing is evolving from a mere “storage” technology to a new vehicle for Business Information Systems (BIS) to manage, organize and provide added-value strategies to current business models. However, the underlying infrastructure for Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) to become a new platform for trading partners and transactions must rely on intelligent, flexible, context-aware Multi-Tenant Architectures. In this paper, we present Cloudio, a Cloud Computing-based metadata-powered Multi-Tenant Architecture, backed with a proof-of-concept J2EE implementation.

Abstract: Cloud computing is a technique for supplying computer facilities and providing access to software via the Internet. Cloud computing represents a contextual shift in how computers are provisioned and accessed. One of the defining characteristics of cloud software service is the transfer of control from the client domain to the service provider. Another is that the client benefits from economy of scale on the part of the provider. Cloud computing is particularly attractive to small and medium-sized educational institutions, because it represents a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than alternative modalities.

Abstract: Carbon emission of IT is an issue. ICT energy consumption is expected to grow by 73% (instead of the originally targeted 26%) until 2020, and the service sector alone counts for 70% of the European economy. Energy consumption is a combination of what we use, and how we use it. Most green initiatives look at what types of devices do consume energy, and try to optimize their up-time as such. Few initiatives, though, measure how do software systems actually use these devices, with the goal of optimizing consumption of devices and computing resources. Basic research is needed to address this software optimization problem. The proposed approach is to make visible the environmental impact of software services by measuring it. In this way, we will become aware of the amount of energy needed by our software, and hence learn how to target software optimization where it is mostly needed. As a first step in this direction, in this paper we define three main problem areas to realize green service-based applications, and propose a service-oriented approach to address them. Thanks to that we can bring clarity in what entails managing and developing green software according to environmental strategies.
