Information technology workforce skills: The software and IT services provider perspective

Abstract: It is now commonplace for an organization to turn to external firms for the provision of IT services and software. As technology advances and the business environment continues to evolve, a key challenge facing IT software and service providers is identifying critical skill sets, both today and in the future. The challenge is compounded as a result of the continuing growth of outsourcing and the increasing demand for technology solutions. This paper explores that challenge through a survey of IT software and service providers. We extend and complement previous studies of non-IT firms by comparing skills sought by non-IT organizations with those of IT services and software providers. Results indicate that, surprisingly, software and services providers place more emphasis on business domain and project management skills than on technical skills. This has implications for the hiring and retention practices of managers, and for academic curriculum and course offerings.

Cloud computing is changing how we communicate

Abstract: Cloud computing refers to a network that distributes processing power, applications, and large systems among many computers. Social media channels and many other applications use cloud computing as their platform. But cloud computing goes beyond that, offering a way for people to expand their local computing power onto the (seemingly) infinite processing power of the Internet. One of the results is a changing method of communication. Cloud computing can be a single-function application, an infrastructure on which these applications (and many others) can run, a set of services that offer the advantages of huge amounts of computing resources, and the ability to store large amounts of data remotely. Many companies and educational institutions are just beginning to realize the benefits of cloud-based applications that have traditionally required site licensing, installation, and maintenance. Parallel changes in large scale software development: an observational case study

Abstract: An essential characteristic of large scale software development is parallel development by teams of developers. How this parallel development is structured and supported has a profound effect on both the quality and timeliness of the product. We conduct an observational case study in which me collect and analyze the change and configuration management history of a legacy system to delineate the boundaries of, and to understand the nature of, the problems encountered in parallel development. The results of our studies are: 1) that the degree of parallelism is very high-higher than considered by tool builders; 2) there are multiple levels of parallelism and the data for some important aspects are uniform and consistent for all levels and 3) the tails of the distributions are long, indicating the tail, rather than the mean, must receive serious attention in providing solutions for these problems.

Method and apparatus for managing multiple data processing systems using existing heterogeneous systems management software

Abstract: A common consolidation management application provides an interface to the multiple different system management software applications and at least one user input console. An adapter in each of the system management software applications supports communication with the consolidation application. A system administrator issues requests to different system management software applications using a common interface provided by the consolidation application. The consolidation application can be installed over an existing complex of computer systems managed by different management applications, without modifying the managed systems or replacing the management applications.
