Abstract: Condition monitoring and diagnosis of industrial systems avoids unexpected failures and greatly improves system reliability and maintainability. Advances in wireless communication, microelectronics, digital electronics and highly integrated electronics in addition to the increasingly need for more efficient controlled electric systems, makes the development of monitoring and supervisory control tools object of study of many researchers. This paper proposes a digital system for energy usage evaluation, condition monitoring, diagnosis and supervisory control for electric systems applying wireless sensor networks (WSNs) connected to a wired infrastructure. The system is based on two hardware topologies responsible for the signal acquisition, processing and transmission: Intelligent Sensors Modules (ISMs) and Remote Data Acquisition Units (RDAUs). The gateway function of the wired network is carried out by Remote Servers (RSs) based on the AMD-Soekris NET4521 architecture, responsible for receiving the data collected and transmitting it to the Supervisory Controller (SCs) based on a PC Pentium IV architecture. The basic characteristics of the presented system are: (a) easy implementation, (b) low cost implementation, (c) easy implementation of redundant routines (security), and (d) portability/versatility.

Abstract: Software engineering tools are critical to the progress of software development, virtually defining the limits of what developers can accomplish. Each generation of tools is preceded by promises of shorter life cycles, greater productivity, greater portability and simplified maintenance. Unfortunately, these promises are often not realized, primarily because tool creators cannot overcome the difficulties associated with integrating tools into a cohesive environment one that is adaptable to both development and maintenance organizations. The paper discusses a list of considerations for managers when evaluating how well a tool fits the organisation's context. It considers integrated project support environments. >

Abstract: The most critical component of a dependability benchmark is the faultload, as it should represent a repeatable, portable, representative, and generally accepted set of faults. These properties are essential to achieve the desired standardization level required by a dependability benchmark but, unfortunately, are very hard to achieve. This is particularly true for software faults, which surely accounts for the fact that this important class of faults has never been used in known dependability benchmark proposals. This paper proposes a new methodology for the definition of faultloads based on software faults for dependability benchmarking. Faultload properties such as repeatability, portability and scalability are also analyzed and validated through experimentation using a case study of dependability benchmarking of Web-servers. We concluded that software fault-based faultloads generated using our methodology are appropriate and useful for dependability benchmarking. As our methodology is not tied to any specific software vendor or platform, it can be used to generate faultloads for the evaluation of any software product such as OLTP systems.

Abstract: The new frontier of research on Information Extraction from texts is portability without any knowledge of Natural Language Processing. The market potential is very large in principle, provided that a suitable easy-to-use and effective methodology is provided. In this paper we describe LearningPinocchio, a system for adaptive Information Extraction from texts that is having good commercial and scientific success. Real world applications have been built and evaluation licenses have been released to external companies for application development. In this paper we outline the basic algorithm behind the scenes and present a number of applications developed with LearningPinocchio. Then we report about an evaluation performed by an independent company. Finally, we discuss the general suitability of this IE technology for real world applications and draw some conclusion.

Abstract: Objectives: Forming the informational reflection of the patients and their care, the Electronic Health Record (EHR) is the core application of any complex health information system or health network. Such an ideally lifelong history file must be reliable, flexible, adaptable to new concepts and technologies, and robust, to allow for sharing knowledge over its lifetime. A sophisticated architecture must be chosen for meeting this challenge. Methods: An advanced EHR architecture for designing and implementing future-proof EHR systems must be a model of generic properties required for any Electronic Patient Record to provide communicable, comprehensive, useful, effective, and legally binding records that preserve their integrity over the time, independent of platforms and systems as well as of national specialties. The resulting approach is based on the ISO Reference Model – Open Distributed Processing. Results: Based on advanced architectural principles introduced in the paper, a new generation of EHR systems has been designed and implemented for demonstrating the feasibility of the approach. This result is presented and evaluated regarding the achievements and problems using the componentbased paradigm of model-driven health information system architectures. Conclusions: The future-proof EHR approach that has been established has been shortly evaluated. Advantages regarding flexibility, reliability, and portability of policy-driven, highly secure, role-dependent applications have to be considered in the light of performance as well as of the availability of network and application services.
