TL;DR: In this article, a case history of the deep mixing method (DMM) as it was developed and applied over a period of ten years during construction of the Boston Central Artery and Tunnel (CA/T).
Abstract: This paper presents a case history of the deep mixing method (DMM) as it was developed and applied over a period of ten years during construction of the Boston Central Artery and Tunnel (CA/T). Deep deposits of marine clay were stabilized with DMM for large open cuts as Bird Island Flats and Fort Point Channel, both of which are described with respect to site conditions, soil properties, DMM installation and characteristics, and measured field performance. Topics addressed in this paper include water pressure distribution behind DMM walls, statistical characterization of soil-cement properties, quality control/quality assurance procedures, comparison of measured and numerically simulated deformation in clay stabilized with various configurations of soil-cement elements, and shear modulus degradation characteristics of in situ soil-cement. Recommendations are made for soil cement properties, installation procedures, analytical modeling, design, and inspection.

TL;DR: In this article, the strength characteristics along the length of the column were determined, and correlations between the SPT blow count and the unconfined compressive strength were developed, showing that the standard penetration test is a simple and effective method for this task.
Abstract: Dry jet mixing has been widely used since the 1980s for stabilization of soft soil. The quality and strength of the dry-jet-mixed columns must be evaluated to confirm the success of the stabilization. The standard penetration test (SPT) is shown to be a simple and effective method for this task. The strength characteristics along the length of the column were determined, and correlations between the SPT blow count and the unconfined compressive strength were developed.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for preparation of chemically-stabilized emulsions of tall oil in water is described. Temperature and pH are controlled during preparation of the emulsion so as to prevent saponification and neutralization of acids in the tall oil component.
Abstract: Methods are disclosed for preparation of chemically-stabilized emulsions of tall oil in water. Temperature and pH are controlled during preparation of the emulsions so as to prevent saponification and neutralization of acids in the tall oil component. The final emulsions have pHs in the range of from about 3.0 to 5.0 and remain phase stable for extended periods of time. Methods are disclosed for using the emulsions for soil treatment to improve soil stabilization and load bearing capacity for roadbed use, for treatment of reclaimed asphalt pavement for reuse as a stabilized base course for roadway construction and for remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil.
