Abstract: A study of the impact of a total solar eclipse (TSE) on surface atmospheric electricity was made using observations of surface electrical potential gradient, conductivity, and boundary layer parameters recorded during the TSE of February 16, 1980, and on a control day at Raichur. The study showed that with the progressing of the eclipse, as a consequence of inhibited convection, the responses of turbulent mixing in the boundary layer near the ground exhibited diminution and subsequent restoration, respectively. During the next 45 min after the totality, when the surface layer remained stably stratified, the diminution in the potential gradient and the increase in the conductivity was maximum; this was about 60% and 200%, respectively, of their corresponding control day values. This result is in very good agreement with most earlier studies of solar eclipses. The study of the impact of the TSE during 3–4 hours of posteclipse showed significant cooling (∼3°C) of the entire surface air layer and a considerable drop in wind speed over the stretch (1130 km×120 km) of the totality-occupied land region. This significant and systematic phenomenon was responsible for setting up a land-sea breezelike circulation, that is, subsidence/downward air motion over the totality-occupied land region and upward over the noneclipsed land across the totality stretch. This resulted in a considerable aerosol-induced reduction in conductivity and about 5 to 8 times increase in potential gradient during the 3–4 hours of posteclipse. This response of the atmospheric electricity parameters was unlike that observed on the normal days.

Abstract: On the occasion of the total solar eclipse in Viareggio (Italy) measurements of intensity of sky radiation and polarization have been carried out at 90 degrees vertical distance from the sun. UV-, green- and red-filters have been used. The results showed a diminution of the intensity during the eclipse of about 3 powers of ten. The sky brightness in the point 90 degrees distant during the total eclipse was similar to the brightness when sun is 7 degrees below the horizon. About one minute before the total eclipse the degree of polarization diminuished to zero. — Furthermore photos of nearly the total sky were made using two cameras with wide angle lenses.

Abstract: Photovoltaic (PV) systems are weather-dependent. A solar eclipse causes significant changes in these parameters, thereby impacting PV generation profile, performance, and power quality of larger grid, where they connect to. This study presents a case study to evaluate the impacts of the solar eclipse of 21 August 2017, on two real-world grid-tied PV systems (1.4 MW and 355 kW) in Miami and Daytona, Florida, the feeders they are connected to, and the management areas they belong to. Four types of analyses are conducted to obtain a comprehensive picture of the impacts using 1 min PV generation data, hourly weather data, real feeder parameters, and daily reliability data. These analyses include: individual PV system performance measurement using power performance index; power quality analysis at the point of interconnection; a study on the operation of voltage regulating devices on the feeders during eclipse peak using an IEEE 8500 test case distribution feeder; and reliability study involving a multilayer perceptron framework for forecasting system reliability of the management areas. Results from this study provide a unique insight into how solar eclipses impact the behaviour of PV systems and the grid, which would be of concern to electric utilities in future high penetration scenarios.

Abstract: Work by earlier scholars has shown that the Dresden Codex contains a table of temporal intervals appropriate to the cyclic occurrence of solar eclipses. This paper demonstrates that if the Maya calendrical dates in the table are converted to the Gregorian calendar by using the so-called Modified Thompson 2 correlation constant, the table gives very accurate warnings of solar eclipses for the late-8th-century A.D. span to which it refers. During the approximately 33 years between November 10,755, and September 6, 788, all of teh 77 solar eclipses affecting the planet occurred within three days of dates appearing in the table. Although most of these eclipses did not affect the Maya area, the table itself provides a mechanism for recognizing and discounting irrelevant predictions. No visible solar eclipse of the late 8th century could have occurred without a very precise warning if the table were used in the fashion suggested here.
