TL;DR: A promising flat-panel solar thermal to electric power conversion technology based on the Seebeck effect and high thermal concentration is demonstrated, thus enabling wider applications and opening up a promising new approach which has the potential to achieve cost-effective conversion of solar energy into electricity.
Abstract: The conversion of sunlight into electricity has been dominated by photovoltaic and solar thermal power generation. A highly efficient solar to electric energy conversion device based on nanostructured thermoelectric materials and high solar concentration is now demonstrated. The results show potential for cost effective solar thermoelectric generation.

TL;DR: In this paper, a high-efficiency polymer solar cell whose device architecture is compatible with a large-scale roll-to-roll process is demonstrated, achieving power conversion efficiency of around 7.4%.
Abstract: Researchers demonstrate a high-efficiency polymer solar cell whose device architecture is compatible with a large-scale roll-to-roll process. Enhanced charge collection in the inverted polymer solar cell design and certified power conversion efficiencies of around 7.4% are reported.

TL;DR: In this article, an up-converter is located behind a solar cell and absorbs transmitted sub-band-gap photons via sequential ground state absorption/excited state absorption processes in a three-level system.
Abstract: A system for solar energy conversion using the up-conversion of sub-band-gap photons to increase the maximum efficiency of a single-junction conventional, bifacial solar cell is discussed. An up-converter is located behind a solar cell and absorbs transmitted sub-band-gap photons via sequential ground state absorption/excited state absorption processes in a three-level system. This generates an excited state in the up-converter from which photons are emitted which are subsequently absorbed in the solar cell and generate electron-hole pairs. The solar energy conversion efficiency of this system in the radiative limit is calculated for different cell geometries and different illumination conditions using a detailed balance model. It is shown that in contrast to an impurity photovoltaic solar cell the conditions of photon selectivity and of complete absorption of high-energy photons can be met simultaneously in this system by restricting the widths of the bands in the up-converter. The upper limit of the ene...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the concentrating solar power (CSP) systems using solar absorbers to convert concentrated sunlight to thermal electric power, and achieve solar absorber surfaces for efficient photothermal conversion having high solar absorptance (a) for solar radiation and low thermal emittance (e) at the operational temperature.
Abstract: This report describes the concentrating solar power (CSP) systems using solar absorbers to convert concentrated sunlight to thermal electric power. It is possible to achieve solar absorber surfaces for efficient photothermal conversion having high solar absorptance (a) for solar radiation and a low thermal emittance (e) at the operational temperature. A low reflectance (?'' 0) at wavelengths (?) 3 mm and a high reflectance (?'' 1) at l 3 mm characterize spectrally selective surfaces. The operational temperature ranges of these materials for solar applications can be categorized as low temperature (T 400 C). High- and mid-temperature applications are needed for CSP applications. For CSP applications, the ideal spectrally selective surface would be low-cost and easy to manufacture, chemically and thermally stable in air at elevated operating temperatures (T= 500 C), and have a solar absorptance= 0.98 and a thermal emittance= 0.05 at 500 C.
