Abstract: In a starter for starting an internal combustion engine with a first output shaft to which a ring gear is coupled, a motor has a second output shaft to which a movable pinion member is coupled and is operative to, when energized, rotate the second output shaft. A solenoid device includes a solenoid actuator linked to the movable pinion member. The solenoid actuator is configured to, when activated, shift the movable pinion member toward the ring gear to be engaged with the ring gear. The solenoid device includes a solenoid switch configure to, when activated, energize the motor. The solenoid actuator and the solenoid switch are integrated with each other to provide the solenoid device. A controller module is configured to individually control an activation of the solenoid actuator and an activation of the solenoid switch. The controller module is mounted on the solenoid device.

Abstract: A solenoid health monitoring system uses a signal conditioner and controller assembly in one embodiment that includes analog circuitry and a DSP controller. The analog circuitry provides signal conditioning to the low-level raw signal coming from a signal acquisition assembly. Software running in a DSP analyzes the incoming data (recorded current signature) and determines the state of the solenoid whether it is energized, de-energized, or in a transitioning state. In one embodiment, the software identifies key features in the current signature during the transition phase and is able to determine the “health” of the solenoid.

Abstract: The ATLAS central solenoid magnet is being constructed to provide a magnetic field of 2 T in the central tracking part of the ATLAS detector. As a key technology for a solenoid coil as thin as possible, a high-strength aluminum stabilized superconductor has been developed, achieving a yield strength of >100 MPa at 4.2 K. This paper describes the status of the design and development of the solenoid magnet.

Abstract: In vibrating a spool of a spool-valve type electromagnetic proportional pressure control valve by applying a dither current so that no static friction acts on the spool, the dither effect tends to weaken in a region where the current is small and in a region where the current is so large as to cause magnetic saturation. An alternating dither current is superimposed on the current supplied to an electromagnet to vibrate the spool with an amplitude small enough not to affect the liquid pressure, and in a control region where the ratio of the solenoid force Fsol to the current I is small, the dither current is controlled so that its amplitude is larger or its frequency is lower than in other regions.

Abstract: Due to their many features including lightweight and low energy consumption, dielectric elastomer (DE) membrane actuators are of interest for a number of industrial applications, such as pumping systems or valve control units. In particular, the use of DEs in valve control units offers advantages over traditional solenoid valves, including lower power requirements and relative simplicity in achieving proportional control. Additionally, DEs generate low thermal dissipation and are capable of virtually silent operation. The contribution of this work is the development of a new valve system based on a circular DE membrane pre-loaded with a linear spring. The valve is designed for pressurized air and operates by actuating a lever mechanism that opens and closes an outlet port. After presenting the operating principle and system design, several experiments are presented to compare actuator force, stroke, and dissipated energy for several pressure differentials and associated volume flows. It is observed that the DE-driven valve achieves a performance similar to a solenoid-based valve, while requiring a significantly lower amount of input energy. In addition, it is shown that DE-membrane valves can be controlled proportionally by simply adjusting the actuator voltage.
