TL;DR: In this article, the position of a plunger inside a solenoid is estimated indirectly through the solenoids's incremental inductance in the high current region, which exploits the advantage that motional electromotive force (EMF) is negligible under normal operating condition.
Abstract: This paper describes a novel method of estimating the position of a plunger inside a solenoid. The solenoid is a single-phase variable reluctance actuator, with a highly nonlinear magnetic circuit. For the proposed method, position is estimated indirectly through the solenoid's incremental inductance in the high current region. It exploits the advantage that motional electromotive force (EMF) is negligible under normal operating condition. The incremental inductance is obtained from the rate of current rise of the pulse-width modulated (PWM) waveform, which in turn, is measured by a dedicated current rise measurement circuit. Position is estimated from a two-dimensional look-up table of incremental inductance and current. The method is simulated and then implemented on a typical industrial solenoid valve. Factors which affect the accuracy of the estimation and methods of overcoming them are also described in the paper.

TL;DR: An optimized helical resonator which increases the plasma density for efficient processing of semiconductor wafers is characterized by a low inductance and, hence, a low Q as discussed by the authors, which can be obtained by using either a distributed or lumped capacitance to reduce the value of ωL to less than about 200 Ohms.
Abstract: An optimized helical resonator which increases the plasma density for efficient processing of semiconductor wafers is characterized by a low inductance and, hence, a low Q. A first embodiment uses either a distributed or lumped capacitance to reduce the value of ωL to less than about 200 Ohms. A second embodiment uses a flat spiral coil having a low value of ωL and resonant as a 1/4 or 1/2 wave resonator. A third embodiment combines features of the first two embodiments using both spiral and solenoid coils as the helical resonator.

TL;DR: The implantable device includes a medication reservoir, a pulsatile pump and an absolute pressure transducer whose output is used to adjust the pulsing rate of the solenoid operated pump so that the programmed time averaged rate of infusion of medication into the body is precisely maintained throughout all operating temperature and pressure conditions as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The implantable device includes a medication reservoir, a pulsatile pump and an absolute pressure transducer. The pumping pressure wave developed in the pumping chamber is measured by the absolute pressure transducer whose output is used to adjust the pulsing rate of the solenoid operated pump so that the programmed time averaged rate of infusion of medication into the body is precisely maintained throughout all operating temperature and pressure conditions.

TL;DR: In this article, a unique antenna unit having upper and lower sensors, each sensor having two orthogonal solenoid coils, are processed to yield corresponding digital values, which are combined in a novel formula to yield a value which has been empirically found to be indicative of lateral postion.
Abstract: An apparatus for determining the direction to and position of a buried conductor carrying an AC signal. The apparatus employs a unique antenna unit having upper and lower sensors, each sensor having two orthogonal solenoid coils. The signals from these coils, which are representative of the magnetic flux therethrough, are processed to yield corresponding digital values. The numbers are combined in a novel formula to yield a value which has been empirically found to be indicative of lateral postion. An appropriate display is controlled by the microprocessor according to the sign and magnitude of the positional value.

TL;DR: In this article, a linear solenoid valve with a flow rate proportional to the current passing through it is used for proportional control of a pneumatic cutting device, such as an intraocular microscissors which closes increasingly as the applied pressure increases.
Abstract: A system 10 for proportional control of a pneumatic cutting device 13 includes a linear solenoid valve 11 having a flow rate therethrough proportional to the current passing through the solenoid 32. The linear solenoid valve 11 is actuated by a selectively varied electrical signal generated by a power supply 18 and controlled by a potentiometer 14 which is itself operated by a pedal foot controller 16. Regulated fluid pressure is fed through the linear soleoid valve 11 to a pneumatic cutting device 13 such as an intraocular microscissors which closes increasingly as the applied pressure increases. The linear solenoid valve 11 includes a flow path which is variably constricted or closed by a valve member 36, and a solenoid 32 which is arranged to pull the valve member 36 to open the flow path. An elastic member 35 is disposed to resiliently bias the valve member to the closed position; the linear restoring force of the elastic member provides a generally linear relationship between the fluid flow-through rate and the current through the solenoid 32, and a proportional relationship between the control pedal position and closure of the cutting device.
