TL;DR: The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor common test facility for the Central Solenoid Model Coil was constructed by the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JARI) as discussed by the authors, which is a forced-flow cooled magnet with the maximum pulsed operation of 2 T/s and generates the rated magnetic field of 13 T at 48 kA with stored energy of 668 MJ.
Abstract: Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute is constructing the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor common test facility for the Central Solenoid Model Coil which is around 180 tons, a forced-flow cooled magnet with the maximum pulsed operation of 2 T/s and generates the rated magnetic field of 13 T at 48 kA with stored energy of 668 MJ. The test facility consists of a coil vacuum chamber, a cryogenic system with the 5-kW refrigerator and 500-g/s cryogenic pump, two pairs of 50-kA current leads, two DC power supplies (50 kA and 60 kA) and two JT-60 pulsed power supplies (50 kA, /spl plusmn/4.5 kV and /spl plusmn/40 kA, /spl plusmn/1.5 kV). The facility will be demonstrating the refrigeration and operation of a fusion pulsed magnet and the design and construction will accumulate experience towards the construction of ITER.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effectiveness of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) plants in both solenoidal and toroidal geometries has been investigated, including linear multipoles and spherical coils.
Abstract: Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) plants have previously been proposed in both solenoidal and toroidal geometries. The former is efficient in terms of the quantity of superconductor required per unit of stored energy. For applications where a fringe field could be a problem, the toroidal geometry, which requires at least a factor of two more material, has been proposed. In addition to the solenoid and toroid, other geometries are possible, such as linear multipoles and spherical coils. These geometries have been considered for use in applications other than energy storage. Here the effectiveness (quantity of superconductor/stored energy) is calculated for various coil geometries. >

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the ratio of the average applied longitudinal field Ez to the induced azimuthal field Eθ at the periphery of the solenoid is equal to the ratio ρ of the circumference of the Solenoid to its pitch.
Abstract: A little‐known result of Townsend and Donaldson is extended to show that, for a solenoid carrying ac or rf current, the ratio of the average applied longitudinal field Ez to the induced azimuthal field Eθ at the periphery of the solenoid is equal to the ratio of the circumference of the solenoid to its pitch. For conventional solenoidal coils such as are used to excite electrodeless rf discharges, this ratio is typically ≳15–30. Applicability of the Ez/Eθ ratio to the design of coils and shields is discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, an excitation coil for both starting and maintaining a plasma arc discharge within the envelope of an arc tube in an electrodeless HID lamp, has first and second solenoidally wound coil portions, each having an axis substantially in alignment with the axis of the other portion.
Abstract: A novel excitation coil for both starting and maintaining a plasma arc discharge within the envelope of an arc tube in an electrodeless HID lamp, has first and second solenoidally - wound coil portions, each having an axis substantially in alignment with the axis of the other portion. The coil conductor of each portion may be disposed upon the surface of an imaginary cone having its vertex situated within the arc tube, or beyond the arc tube and within the volume of the other coil portion. The ends of each of the solenoid portions furthest from one another are connected together, and the remaining closely-positioned coil ends provide a sufficiently high starting potential, responsive to receiving an excitation signal, for providing a magnetic field; at any instant the magnetic field of each of the two portions combines in-phase in the volume, between the closer ends of both portions, into which the arc tube is normally inserted.
