TL;DR: In this article, a high latent cooling control assembly for a compressionexpansion air conditioning system employs a subcooler coil disposed in the leaving air side of the indoor air evaporator coil.
Abstract: A high latent cooling control assembly for a compression-expansion air conditioning system employs a subcooler coil (44) disposed in the leaving air side of the indoor air evaporator coil (22). A liquid line branch (42) supplies condensed liquid refrigerant from the condenser (16) to the subcooler coil (44), and a flow restrictor (48), which can be a TXV, drops the sub-cooled liquid pressure before the refrigerant reaches the expansion device (20) associated with the evaporator coil (22). A bypass line (50) connects the condenser (16) to the expansion device (20), and has a liquid line solenoid valve (32) that is humidistat actuated. When dehumidification is called for, the solenoid is closed and refrigerant flows through the subcooler coil (44). When the humidistat is satisfied, the solenoid opens and the refrigerant path bypasses the subcooler coil (44). The high latent subcooler assembly (40) can be field-installed or retrofitted onto an existing air conditioner.

TL;DR: In this article, a numerical simulation of the screening current-induced magnetic field for YBCO solenoids is presented. But the simulation is limited to the case of a single Y-coil.
Abstract: A numerical simulation method which deals with the screening current-induced magnetic field for YBCO coils, including the self field effect induced by the transport current, has been developed. The simulation agrees well with the experimental results for an YBCO solenoid. Based on the numerical simulation, the effect of coil shape on the screening current-induced magnetic field intensity for the YBCO coils has been investigated. The field was demonstrated to reach a maximum if the solenoid corresponds to the minimum-volume design; it amounts to as large as -18% of the central magnetic field. Two major problems must be considered for YBCO coils regarding the screening current: (a) a reduction in the central magnetic field by the screening current and (b) a temporal drift of the apparent magnetic field due to relaxation of the screening current by flux creep. It is suggested that the latter can be suppressed by a current sweep reversal technique.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for detecting when a solenoid has closed, or nearly closed, indirectly senses changes in the inductance of the coil as the solenoids closes.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for electronically detecting when a solenoid has closed, or nearly closed, indirectly senses changes in the inductance of the solenoid's coil as the solenoid closes. When the inductance has changed by a selected amount, the solenoid is assumed to have closed, or nearly closed, and current through the coil is promptly reduced. Preferably, changes in the inductance of the coil are sensed by establishing a plurality of current peaks in the coil, and sensing the current's decay time between peaks. When the decay time of a measured current peak exceeds the decay time of a previously measured current peak by a selected amount, it is assumed that the solenoid has closed, or nearly closed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the development of two types of on-chip 3D inductors, a vertical spiral inductor and a solenoid inductor, by using a 3D assembly process called plastic deformation magnetic assembly.
Abstract: On-chip inductors are critical for enabling portable power-efficient wireless communication systems. Existing on-chip spiral inductors based on conventional planar integrated-circuit fabrication technology suffer from substrate loss and parasitics, and have relatively large footprints. In this paper, we discuss the development of two types of on-chip three-dimensional (3-D) inductors-a vertical spiral inductor and a solenoid inductor-by using a 3-D assembly process called plastic deformation magnetic assembly. Prototype vertical spiral inductors and solenoid inductors have been fabricated and tested. Experimental results show that the vertical spiral inductors can achieve better performance and a smaller footprint than the in-plane ones.

TL;DR: In this paper, a proportional variable force solenoid valve with a permanent magnet armature is described, where a plate spring retainer is disposed on the flat axial end of the armature and is received with clearance in an enlarged longitudinal bore region.
Abstract: A proportional variable force solenoid valve comprises a non-magnetic housing having a solenoid and a permanent magnet armature movable by the solenoid in response to current applied to the solenoid, a coil compression spring for biasing the armature in a direction to establish a valve fluid pressure response to solenoid current, and a valve housing closure engaging the spring and permanently deformed to position the closure relative to the spring in a manner to adjust the valve response. The size of the valve is reduced by providing a permanent magnet armature of reduced length having a flat outermost axial end which is engaged by the spring. A plate spring retainer is disposed on the flat axial end of the permanent magnet armature and is received with clearance in an enlarged longitudinal bore region of the solenoid coil bobbin.
