TL;DR: In this article, an electromechanical valve assembly incorporates an actuator, such as a limited angle torque motor or solenoid, to open or close the valve in response to a direct current or low frequency electrical signal.
Abstract: An electromechanical valve assembly incorporates an electromechanical actuator, such as a limited angle torque motor or solenoid, to open or close the valve in response to a direct current or low frequency electrical signal. A valve position sensor detects the valve position in response to a second, relatively high frequency electrical signal. The actuator and sensor are electrically connected in parallel so that the valve may be actuated and the valve position may be determined through a single pair of electrical leads. The position sensor preferably includes an electrical coil having a reactance that varies with incident magnetic flux, the magnitude of which depends on valve position.

TL;DR: In this article, an electrically controlled faucet is disclosed which is operable by pushing a button or placing hands within the operating range of a sensor, which is mounted on a sink deck or like surface using specially configured gasket means.
Abstract: An electrically controlled faucet is disclosed which is operable by pushing a button or placing hands within the operating range of a sensor. The faucet is mounted to a sink deck or like surface using specially configured gasket means which insure against slippage of the faucet on the deck. The gasketing means provide special channels through which electrical operating wires can be securely passed from the faucet to operating means below the sink deck. These operating means include a solenoid valve that controls fluid flow through the faucet and a temperature control valve fluidly linked to the solenoid valve. Solenoid disabling pressure buildup in the line linking the temperature control valve and solenoid is bled through special bleed means in the temperature control valve inlets.

TL;DR: In this article, the mutual inductance between a thin circular filament coil and a massive circular solenoid in air is calculated over complete elliptical integrals of the first and second kind, Heumann's Lambda function, and one term that has to be solved numerically.
Abstract: New and fast procedures for calculating the mutual inductance between a thin circular filament coil and a massive circular solenoid in air are presented. The coils are axisymmetric. These results are expressed over the complete elliptical integrals of the first and second kind, Heumann's Lambda function, and one term that has to be solved numerically. The numerical integration of this term is based on some numerical integrations to get the satisfactory accuracy and computational cost. These new expressions are accurate and simple to apply for useful applications. Also, another comparative method based on an approximation of the massive solenoid by Maxwell's coils is given. The paper discusses the computational cost and the accuracy. Results obtained by the two approaches are in excellent agreement.

TL;DR: In this article, a dual rate cascade control for converting a switching solenoid into a proportional actuator is proposed, using a fast inner loop current controller and a slower PID outer loop trajectory controller.
Abstract: Solenoids are nonlinear actuating devices normally used in a switching mode. This paper proposes a dual rate cascade control for converting a switching solenoid into a proportional actuator. A fast inner loop current controller and a slower PID outer loop trajectory controller are employed, A simple static nonlinear map is used to partially linearise the system. This method results in a proportional actuator which is effective and practical. >

TL;DR: In this paper, an atomic magnetic gradiometer based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in alkali-metal (Rb87) vapor and using frequency-modulated laser light is presented.
Abstract: We report on the design, characterization, and applications of a sensitive atomic magnetic gradiometer. The device is based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in alkali-metal (Rb87) vapor and uses frequency-modulated laser light. The magnetic field produced by a sample is detected by measuring the frequency of a resonance in optical rotation that arises when the modulation frequency equals twice the Larmor precession frequency of the Rb atoms. The gradiometer consists of two atomic magnetometers. The rotation of light polarization in each magnetometer is detected with a balanced polarimeter. The sensitivity of the gradiometer is 0.8nG∕Hz1∕2 for near-dc (0.1Hz) magnetic fields, with a base line of 2.5cm. For applications in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a long solenoid that pierces the magnetic shields provides an ∼0.5G leading field for the nuclear spins in the sample. Our apparatus is particularly suited for remote detection of NMR and MRI. We demonstrate a poi...
