Abstract: We describe a new technology for superconducting quadrupole magnets especially for use in particle accelerators. The principle is based on the application of a sinusoidal modulation to the axial positions of the conductor windings in solenoids. The method can also be employed to produce higher-order multipole fields. Due to their solenoid-like geometry, these coils are significantly simpler to manufacture than standard (racetrack) cosine-2-theta coils and have significantly smaller systematic field errors without using any field-shaping spacers. When two complementary coil layers (with opposite current flow) are combined, the solenoid components of the fields are cancelled and the quadrupole or higher-order fields add. An example of such a design is described which generates a gradient of 130 T/m with systematic errors less than 10/sup -8/ at 67% of the aperture.

Abstract: A rectilinear motion proportional solenoid which exhibits linear output motion that is linearly proportional to the applied electrical current input. The solenoid has an adjustment mechanism which is external to the working components of the solenoid for adjusting the gain or rate of displacement of the solenoid after final assembly or while the solenoid is operating without degrading the linearity characteristics, thus allowing dynamic calibration of an operating system.

Abstract: A solenoid valve with an electronic position indicator in which the armature of the solenoid coil means is itself the movable valve member or is operatively coupled with the movable valve member characterized in that the solenoid coil means is hooked up as an inductance bridge to an AC power source, the armature being effective to vary the relative inductances of the legs of the bridge according to the position of the armature with respect to said solenoid coil means, the voltage drops at the juncture of the legs being compared with in-phase reference voltages and resolved by a phase detector having an output which indicates the position of the armature and thus indicates the position of the valve. The invention herein is further characterized in that the armature is actuated by DC energization of the solenoid coil means and in that the position indicator has condensor means to prevent the DC voltage from entering the position indicating circuitry.

Abstract: We report new high quality factor (Q) integrated GHz magnetic inductors based on solenoid structures with FeGaB/Al2O3 multilayer films, which show significantly enhanced inductance and quality factor at GHz frequencies over their air core counterparts. These inductors show an excellent high-frequency performance with a wide operation frequency range 0.5-2.5 GHz, in which the inductance is flat and the peak quality factor can reach ~20. The inductance of the magnetic inductor shows >100% enhancement compared with that of the same size air core inductor. These novel GHz inductors with high inductance and Q enhancement show great promise for applications in radio frequency integrated circuits.

Abstract: This paper presents the modeling, optimization, and validation of a hollow plunger type solenoid for high speed On/Off valve. In the preliminary design, an accurate equivalent magnetic circuit model of the proposed solenoid is carried out, and the magnetic circuit is arranged in Kirchhoffs voltage law matrix form for the convenience of computer calculation. An iterative method is applied to obtain accurate permeability of the nonlinear magnetic material. To optimize the design parameters, a multiobjective optimization process is developed, and the multiobjective particle swarm optimization method is used to obtain the Pareto front of the desired objectives. An approved solution in Pareto front is selected by analytic hierarchy process and validated by the finite element analysis (FEA) method. A prototype based on the final optimized design is manufactured and tested. The experiment results verified the validation proposed design and optimization process.
