Abstract: An RF telemetry system for powering and control of microminiature integrated transducers packaged in a hermetically sealed custom-made glass capsule is described. A class-E power amplifier is utilized to energize and control a single-channel microstimulator for neuromuscular applications. The transmitter can deliver 1.5 W of power through a solenoid antenna using a 12-V rechargeable battery, while achieving efficiencies greater than 90%. The microstimulator antenna is a 1.5-mm-diameter, 4-5-mm-long ferrite-cored solenoid coil which can generate peak voltages of up to 50 V, and up to 50 mW of power. A custom-made glass capsule electrostatically bonded to the microstimulator's silicon carrier provides a hermetic package for the implant. Lead transfer into the sealed chamber is achieved using thin films of iridium insulated with low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) thin films. Helium leak tests on these structures show leak rates below 10/sup -9/ cm/sup 3//s. >

Abstract: A two-part sensor includes a power source/signal receiver and a signal generator which are physically spaced and disconnected from one another. The power source/signal receiver is encased within transparent encapsulating material and includes an annular solenoid core with an aperture, a coil around the core and a photodiode mounted in the aperture. The photodiode detects a modulated light beam received from the signal generator and produces an output information signal. The solenoid coil produces a fluctuating magnetic field when connected to a power supply. The signal generator is encased within transparent encapsulating material and includes an annular relay coil with an aperture, a coil around the core, a transducer circuit and an LED mounted within the aperture. The relay coil provides a signal generator supply potential when positioned within the magnetic field produced by the power source/signal receiver. The supply potential powers the transducer circuit and the LED. The transducer circuit generates a modulated transducer signal as a function of a sensed parameter. The LED is coupled to the transducer circuit and produces the modulated light beam as a function of the transducer signal.

Abstract: A solenoid driven valve is disclosed which is adaptable for controlling the introduction of a high pressure fluid into a fluid trapping assembly having an absorption column topped with an annular orifice expansion nozzle. The valve has an inlet port to introduce high pressure fluid, an axially moving solenoid driven pin which engages means to restrict fluid flow into said column. A diaphragm is located within the valve to direct fluid into the column and which separates the fluid in a region of high pressure from ambient pressures.

Abstract: The large currents in the cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) destined for the high field magnets in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), cause huge transverse forces on the strands compressing the cable against one side of the conduit. This load causes transverse compressive strain in the strands at the crossovers contacts. Moreover, the strands are also subjected to bending and contact surfaces micro-sliding, which results into friction and anomalous contact resistance versus force behavior. Three Nb/sub 3/Sn central solenoid model coil (CSMC) conductors were tested previously in the Twente Cryogenic Cable Press up to 40 cycles with a transverse peak load of 650 kN/m. This press can transmit a variable (cyclic) transverse force directly to a cable section of 400 mm length at a temperature of 4.2 K (or higher). To explore life-time cycling, we tested a CSMC Nb/sub 3/Sn conductor up to 40,000 cycles. The coupling loss and the associated interstrand resistance between various strands and strand bundles are measured at various loads. The force on the cable and the displacement are monitored in order to determine the effective cable Young's modulus and the mechanical heat generation. Some aspects of strand deformation in CICC's are discussed. The test results are discussed in view of previous press results and data extracted from the ITER model coil tests.
