Abstract: Pulses having durations as short as 60 fsec have been directly generated by a self-mode-locked, dispersion-compensated Ti:sapphire laser. By using an extracavity fiber-prism pulse compressor, pulse durations as short as 45 fsec have been obtained.

Abstract: Spectroscopic measurements and laser performance of Ti:Al2O3 are discussed in detail. Data on absorption and fluorescence spectra and fluorescence lifetime as a function of temperature are presented. Laser characteristics observed with pulsed-dye-laser, frequency-doubled Nd:YAG-laser, and argon-ion-laser pumping are covered and show that nearly quantum-limited conversion of pump radiation can be achieved, along with tuning over the wavelength range 660–986 nm.

Abstract: Transparent polycrystalline YAG with nearly the same optical characteristics as those of a single crystal were fabricated by a solid-state reaction method using high-purity powders (>99.99 wt% purity). The average grain size and relative density of the 1.1 at.% ND:YAG ceramics obtained were about 50 {micro}m and 99.98%, respectively. An oscillation experiment was performed on a cw laser by the diode laser excitation system using the fabricated ceramics. The experimental results indicated an oscillation threshold and a slope efficiency of 309 mW and 28%, respectively. These values were equivalent or superior to those of the 0.9 at.% ND:YAG single crystal fabricated by the Czochralski method.

Abstract: Gain narrowing in optically pumped thin films, both neat and undiluted, of luminescent conjugated polymers with different molecular structures was demonstrated. These results indicate that the polymers studied have large cross sections for stimulated emission, that population inversion can be achieved at low pump energies, and that the emitted photons travel distances greater than the gain length within the gain medium. The use of simple waveguide structures is sufficient to cause low gain narrowing thresholds in submicrometer-thick films.

Abstract: We introduce a new low-loss fast intracavity semiconductor Fabry-Perot saturable absorber operated at anti-resonance both to start and sustain stable mode locking of a cw-pumped Nd:YLF laser. We achieved a 3.3-ps pulse duration at a 220-MHz repetition rate. The average output power was 700 mW with 2 W of cw pump power from a Ti:sapphire laser. At pump powers of less than 1.6 W the laser self-Q switches and produces 4-ps pulses within a 1.4-micros Q-switched pulse at an approximately 150-kHz repetition rate determined by the relaxation oscillation of the Nd:YLF laser. Both modes of operation are stable. In terms of coupled-cavity mode locking, the intra-cavity antiresonant Fabry-Perot saturable absorber corresponds to monolithic resonant passive mode locking.
