Abstract: The occurrence times of discharges of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine of an automotive vehicle having a transmission and sources for deriving signals indicative of: (a) the engine being cranked or operating normally, (b) the transmission being in high or low gear, (c) engine speed, and (d) the values of parameters determining engine load are controlled by a computer responsive to the signals. The computer includes a read only memory having tables for storing signals with values indicative of spark advance and dwell angle as functions of engine load and engine speed for the engine being cranked, operating normally, the transmission being in high and low gear. The computer responds to the signals of the sources for selecting from the tables stored signals having values indicative of spark advance and dwell angle corresponding with the conditions indicated by signals (a), (b), (c) and (d). A spark control circuit responds to the signals having values indicative of spark advance and dwell angle to control the occurrence times of sparking for each cylinder of the engine. The same type of computer is susceptible to use for vehicles having different spark advance and dwell angle characteristics as functions of engine speed and engine load. The tables are for plural vehicle types having the different characteristics. Switches selectively enable signals of the tables associated with only one of the vehicle types to be coupled to the computer.

TL;DR: In this paper, a control system for automatically maintaining a maximum output voltage across the electrodes of a precipitator under varying load conditions without requiring manual readjustment of sensitivity controls is presented.
Abstract: A control system for automatically maintaining a maximum output voltage across the electrodes of a precipitator under varying load conditions without requiring manual readjustment of sensitivity controls. A spark threshold detector provides a threshold crossing signal when a spark occurs across the electrodes of the precipitator. Control circuitry including a ramp generator is responsive to the threshold crossing signal for providing a ramp signal which is effective to vary the voltage applied to the precipitator as a function of the desired spark rate. A sensitivity adjust circuit produces a compensating signal proportional to the magnitude of the ripple on the voltage applied to the precipitator. The DC level of the spark threshold detector is adjusted in accordance with the compensation signal so that the detector is insensitive to variations in the ripple whereby the predetermined spark rate is automatically maintained.

TL;DR: In this article, a self-triggering hybrid spark chamber of the gas-flow type including a spark chamber portion and a proportional chamber portion, and utilizing a high speed discharge circuit for the proportional chamber, was constructed so that upon generation of a precedent spark in the spark chamber, the discharge circuit was simultaneously operated in response to the spark so as to rapidly lower an electric field intensity of the proportional chamber portion.
Abstract: A method of stabilizing operation of a hybrid spark chamber is disclosed. The method is applied to a self-triggering hybrid spark chamber of the gas-flow type including a spark chamber portion and a proportional chamber portion, and utilizes a high speed discharge circuit for the proportional chamber portion, the high speed discharge circuit being so constructed that upon generation of a precedent spark in the spark chamber portion by electrons produced by radiation and multipled in the proportional chamber portion the discharge circuit is simultaneously operated in response to the spark so as to rapidly lower an electric field intensity of the proportional chamber portion, thereby preventing the generation in the proportional chamber of any induced spark.

TL;DR: In this article, a triangular wave voltage generator and comparator combine to retard the spark events from spark timing signals, the voltage ramping in one direction toward a reference in response to a spark timing signal and ramping when the comparator senses that the voltage equals the reference, at which time a spark event is initiated.
Abstract: A spark ignited internal combustion engine includes a spark coil in which current is turned on and off to generate spark events. A triangular wave voltage generator and comparator combine to retard the spark events from spark timing signals, the voltage ramping in one direction toward a reference in response to a spark timing signal and ramping in the other direction when the comparator senses that the voltage equals the reference, at which time a spark event is initiated. An RF clamp clamps the input to the comparator to prevent initiation of a spark event from each spark event to the following spark timing event. A minimum burn timer may be initiated by the comparator to prevent current flow in the spark coil for a minimum predetermined time after the initiation of a spark event; and the RF clamp may include a timer to delay its initiation sufficiently to allow latching of the minimum burn timer.
