TL;DR: In this paper, a volumetric display with microbubbles is presented, which is based on a computer-generated hologram displayed on a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator.
Abstract: To develop a volumetric display of the kind we see in science fiction movies is a dream of many display researchers, including us. Here, we show a new volumetric display with microbubble voxels. The microbubbles are three-dimensionally generated in liquid by focused femtosecond laser pulses. The use of a high-viscosity liquid, which is a key part of the development of this idea, slows down the movement of the microbubbles, and, as a result, volumetric graphics can be displayed. This volumetric bubble display has a wide-angle view, simple refreshing, and no addressing wires, since the transparent liquid is accessed optically rather than electronically. It achieves full-color graphics composed of light-scattering voxels controlled by illumination light sources. Furthermore, a holographic laser drawing method based on a computer-generated hologram displayed on a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator controls the light intensity of the microbubble voxels with an increase in the number of voxels per unit time and the spatial shaping of the voxels.

TL;DR: In this article, a light source system and projection system was proposed, consisting of a first light source (1) producing first wide spectrum light, a second light source(2) producing second wavelength light, and a light splitting and light combining device (2) used to split and combine light.
Abstract: A light source system and projection system, the light source system comprising: a first light source ( 1 ) producing first wide spectrum light, a second light source ( 103 ) producing second wavelength light, a light splitting and light combining device ( 2 ) used to split and combine light, a first spatial light modulator ( 106 ), a second spatial light modulator ( 107 ), and a control device ( 108 ) controlling the first light source ( 1 ) and the second light source ( 103 ) and modulating the first spatial light modulator ( 106 ) and the second spatial light modulator ( 107 ). The projection system comprises the light source system. The light source system and projection system have high brightness and wide color gamut, effectively eliminating rainbow effect, and also have a simple structure and low cost.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that a polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal can offer both phase modulation and high speed switching in a silicon backplane device which is independent of the input polarization state.
Abstract: Liquid crystal over silicon (LCoS) spatial light modulator technology has become dominant in industries such as pico-projection, which require high-quality reflective microdisplays for intensity modulation of light. They are, however, restricted from being used in wider optical applications, such as computer-generated holography, adaptive optics, and optical correlation, due to their phase modulation ability. The main drawback of these devices is that their modulation is based on simple planar or twisted nematic liquid crystals, which are inherently slow mechanisms due to their viscoelastic properties. Their use is also limited due to fact that the phase modulation is dependent on the state of polarization of the illumination. In this paper, we demonstrate that a polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal can offer both phase modulation and high speed switching in a silicon backplane device which is independent of the input polarization state. The LCoS device shows continuous phase modulation of light with a submillisecond switching time and insensitivity to the input light polarization direction. This type of phase modulation opens up a whole new class of applications for LCoS technology.

TL;DR: Efficient optical modulation of surface-normal reflection in a novel device structure integrating graphene on a high contrast grating (HCG) resonator indicates that the integrated structure of graphene-on-HCG shows great promise for display, imaging and interconnects applications with low-cost and large scalability.
Abstract: We demonstrate efficient optical modulation of surface-normal reflection in a novel device structure integrating graphene on a high contrast grating (HCG) resonator. As high as 11 dB extinction ratio is achieved by varying the voltage applied to a single atomic layer of graphene on a HCG resonator. The device topology facilitates easy fabrication of large 2D arrays, and free-space operation. We also demonstrate a graphene-oxide-graphene structure which can potentially operate at MHz operation speed. The devices are fully fabricated by standard CMOS compatible processes indicating that the integrated structure of graphene-on-HCG shows great promise for display, imaging and interconnects applications with low-cost and large scalability.
