TL;DR: A novel parallel-aligned liquid-crystal (LC) spatial light modulator (SLM) that has been designed to operate in a phase-only mode for wave-front correction and obtained a peak-to-valley value of 0.07049lambda(lambda= 0.6328microm) after correction.
Abstract: We introduce a novel parallel-aligned liquid-crystal (LC) spatial light modulator (SLM) that has been designed to operate in a phase-only mode for wave-front correction. We measured and analyzed theoretically the electro-optic characteristics of the LC SLM and obtained a peak-to-valley value of 0.07049lambda(lambda= 0.6328microm) after correction. A Strehl ratio of 0.989 indicates the approximate upper limit of an aberrated wave front that the LC SLM can correct when it is used in an adaptive optical system.

TL;DR: In this paper, an AC component of a lamp driving waveform which may cause variations in intensity of the lamp output is synchronized to the video frame rate, stopping the beating and rolling of color bands in a video frame that may be produced by a ripple in light intensity.
Abstract: A color image display system (10, 110, 120, 150) having a lamp power supply (78, 134, 152) switching rate being a multiple of, and synchronized to, a video frame rate. An AC component of a lamp driving waveform which may cause variations in intensity of the lamp output is synchronized to the video frame rate. Synchronizing the lamp power supply switching rate to the frame rate stops the beating and rolling of color bands in the video frame that may be produced by a ripple in light intensity. An odd number of switching cycles per two frame periods is chosen to alternate the phase of the ripple pattern frame-to-frame for ripple cancellation through integration. The lamp driving waveform may be amplitude modulated (90) to balance a lamp (14) that has spectral deficiencies. A DMD spatial light modulator (26) is utilized to modulate the colored light and generate a light image on a display (42) in either a sequential, or non-sequential image display system.

TL;DR: The diffraction efficiency of near-sinusoidal gratings written on the device is of the order of 30%, which is close to theoretical maximum, and a comparison between the experimental results and the theoretical analysis shows good agreement.
Abstract: An optically addressed parallel-aligned nematic-liquid-crystal spatial light modulator is developed for applications in optical information processing and interferometry. Its performance, including diffraction efficiency, is measured, and a theoretical analysis of diffraction efficiency is performed. A comparison between the experimental results and the theoretical analysis shows good agreement. The diffraction efficiency of near-sinusoidal gratings written on the device is of the order of 30%, which is close to theoretical maximum.

TL;DR: In this paper, a nonlinear spatial filter was constructed by equivalently imprinting the vortex phase plate onto the potassium titanyl phosphate crystal using second harmonic generation (SHG), and the phase or intensity objects were displayed by a spatial light modulator (SLM) and illuminated with 1064nm infrared light.
Abstract: Spiral phase contrast (SPC) imaging offers a vital, convenient tool for edge detection in image processing. Despite significant experimental and theoretical progress in this area, SPC imaging with invisible light is still lacking. In contrast to the general SPC scheme, here we construct a nonlinear spatial filter by equivalently imprinting the vortex phase plate onto the potassium titanyl phosphate crystal using second harmonic generation (SHG). The phase or intensity objects are displayed by a spatial light modulator (SLM) and illuminated with 1064 nm infrared light. Then the combination of our nonlinear filter with SHG in the Fourier domain enables concise, yet highly efficient SPC imaging, leading to a visible edge enhancement with invisible illumination. By programming a running dog cartoon with SLM, we also demonstrate the capacity of our scheme to detect edges and contours in real time. Our present scheme could find direct applications in infrared monitoring.

TL;DR: The dynamic performance of the adaptive optics system is investigated in detail using a diffractive wavefront generator based on a ferroelectric spatial light modulator to produce wavefronts with time-varying aberrations.
Abstract: A low cost adaptive optics system constructed almost entirely of commercially available components is presented. The system uses a 37 actuator membrane mirror and operates at frame rates up to 800Hz using a single processor. Numerical modelling of the membrane mirror is used to optimize parameters of the system. The dynamic performance of the system is investigated in detail using a diffractive wavefront generator based on a ferroelectric spatial light modulator. This is used to produce wavefronts with time-varying aberrations. The ability of the system to correct for Kolmogorov turbulence with different strengths and effective wind speeds is measured experimentally using the wavefront generator.
