Abstract: A reflective spatial light modulator array is described incorporating liquid crystal devices, mirrors, a semiconductor substrate, electrical circuits, and a reflector/absorber layer for blocking light. The invention overcomes the problem of shielding light from semiconductor devices, high optical throughput and contrast, pixel storage capacitance to hold the voltage across the liquid crystal device and precise control of the liquid crystal device thickness without spacers obscuring the mirrors.

Abstract: We describe a simple method for generating known optical aberrations dynamically, using a ferroelectric liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. Aberrations inherent in the optical system are measured and corrected, and as an example Kolmogorov turbulence is simulated for aperture sizes D/r(0) from 0 to 30, varying at frame rates up to 2.5 kHz. A measure of wave-front generation efficiency is introduced and is shown to be better than 86% for Kolmogorov phase screens with D/r(0) in the range from 0 to 30.

Abstract: An apparatus and method of printing two-dimensional swaths of area onto a photosensitive media uses at least one reflective liquid crystal spatial light modulator. In the apparatus and method, illumination optics receive light from a light source and image the light at a polarization beamsplitter element. The polarization beamsplitter element images one polarization state of light at the spatial light modulator to create an essentially telecentric illumination at the spatial light modulator.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for compensating the impact of at least one defective pixel with a known position in a spatial light modulator (SLM) when creating a pattern of the SLM on a work piece covered with a layer sensitive to electromagnetic radiation. A source for emitting electromagnetic radiation is provided. Said radiation is illuminating said SLM having a plurality of modulating elements (pixels). In a writing pass an image of said modulator is projected on said work piece. A compensation for defective pixels in at least one other writing pass is performed. The invention also relates to an apparatus for performing said method.

Abstract: Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH) records holograms under incoherent illumination. FINCH was implemented with two focal length diffractive lenses on a spatial light modulator (SLM). Improved image resolution over previous single lens systems and at wider bandwidths was observed. For a given image magnification and light source bandwidth, FINCH with two lenses of close focal lengths yields a better hologram in comparison to a single diffractive lens FINCH. Three techniques of lens multiplexing on the SLM were tested and the best method was randomly and uniformly distributing the two lenses. The improved quality of the hologram results from a reduced optical path difference of the interfering beams and increased efficiency.
