TL;DR: In this paper, a near-to-eye display device includes a spatial light modulator that modulates an illumination wave to create a virtual scene wave that is steered to a useful portion of an exit pupil plane.
Abstract: A near-to-eye display device includes a spatial light modulator. The spatial light modulator modulates an illumination wave to create a virtual-scene wave that is steered to a useful portion of an exit pupil plane. Higher diffraction orders and noise beams are filtered out by the user's pupil acting as a spatial filter.

TL;DR: A new optical configuration of incoherent digital holography is presented to improve the quality of reconstructed images when the random polarization state of incoherence light is used and to suppress the unmodulated terms of a spatial light modulator.
Abstract: A new optical configuration of incoherent digital holography is presented to improve the quality of reconstructed images when the random polarization state of incoherent light is used. The proposed system improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the holograms by suppressing the unmodulated terms of a spatial light modulator. To generate the self-interference of a quasi-incoherent point-like source, we use a dual-focusing lens with diffraction gratings. The preliminary experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed method by reconstructing two point-like sources generated by a LED light source. When the pixel pitch of the phase-mode SLM is small enough, the off-axis hologram can be generated. The single-shot recording of the incoherent digital holography is expected.

TL;DR: In this article, a digital cinema projection apparatus with a first etendue value for providing polarized polychromatic light is described, which is within 15% or greater than the first etende value corresponding to the illumination source.
Abstract: A digital cinema projection apparatus having an illumination source with a first etendue value for providing polarized polychromatic light. A first lens element lies in the path of the polarized polychromatic light for forming a substantially telecentric polarized polychromatic light beam. A color separator separates the telecentric polarized polychromatic light beam into at least two telecentric color light beams. At least two transmissive spatial light modulators modulate the two telecentric color light beams. There is an etendue value associated with each spatial light modulator. The etendue value is within 15% or greater than the first etendue value corresponding to the illumination source. A color combiner combines the modulated color beams along a common optical axis, forming a multicolor modulated beam thereby; and a projection lens directs the multicolor modulated beam toward a display surface.

TL;DR: In this paper, the application of evanescent photovoltaic (PV) fields, generated by visible illumination of Fe:LiNbO3 substrates, for parallel massive trapping and manipulation of micro- and nano-objects is critically reviewed.
Abstract: The application of evanescent photovoltaic (PV) fields, generated by visible illumination of Fe:LiNbO3 substrates, for parallel massive trapping and manipulation of micro- and nano-objects is critically reviewed. The technique has been often referred to as photovoltaic or photorefractive tweezers. The main advantage of the new method is that the involved electrophoretic and/or dielectrophoretic forces do not require any electrodes and large scale manipulation of nano-objects can be easily achieved using the patterning capabilities of light. The paper describes the experimental techniques for particle trapping and the main reported experimental results obtained with a variety of micro- and nano-particles (dielectric and conductive) and different illumination configurations (single beam, holographic geometry, and spatial light modulator projection). The report also pays attention to the physical basis of the method, namely, the coupling of the evanescent photorefractive fields to the dielectric response of the nano-particles. The role of a number of physical parameters such as the contrast and spatial periodicities of the illumination pattern or the particle deposition method is discussed. Moreover, the main properties of the obtained particle patterns in relation to potential applications are summarized, and first demonstrations reviewed. Finally, the PV method is discussed in comparison to other patterning strategies, such as those based on the pyroelectric response and the electric fields associated to domain poling of ferroelectric materials.

TL;DR: The operating characteristics of a new class of spatial light modulator that utilize ferroelectric liquid crystals and their application to building optical neural network architectures are discussed.
Abstract: Spatial light modulators can be used in neurocomputing as input and output display devices and storage media for the synaptic weights. We discuss the operating characteristics of a new class of spatial light modulator that utilize ferroelectric liquid crystals and their application to building optical neural network architectures.
