TL;DR: An algorithm based on shrinkage in the curvelet domain to attenuate speckles in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images shows significant improvement of image quality.
Abstract: We describe an algorithm based on shrinkage in the curvelet domain to attenuate speckles in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. The algorithm exploits the curvelet transform's sparse representation of edge discontinuities that are common in OCT images and its ability to map signals and noise into different areas in the curvelet domain. The speckle attenuation is controlled by a single parameter that determines the threshold in the curvelet domain. Applying the algorithm to OCT images shows significant improvement of image quality.

TL;DR: The results indicate that this method can reduce the speckle in reconstructed images effectively; furthermore, it will not cause the internal structure in the reconstructed pixels to cause the stringent alignment of pixels.
Abstract: Complex amplitude modulation method is presented theoretically and performed experimentally for three-dimensional (3D) dynamic holographic display with reduced speckle using a single phase-only spatial light modulator. The determination of essential factors is discussed based on the basic principle and theory. The numerical simulations and optical experiments are performed, where the static and animated objects without refinement on the surfaces and without random initial phases are reconstructed successfully. The results indicate that this method can reduce the speckle in reconstructed images effectively; furthermore, it will not cause the internal structure in the reconstructed pixels. Since the complex amplitude modulation is based on the principle of phase-only hologram, it does not need the stringent alignment of pixels. This method can be used for high resolution imaging or measurement in various optical areas.

TL;DR: Speckle contrast close to that of white light was obtained using a vibrating fiber bundle with combined temporal, spatial, and angular diversities of the illumination.
Abstract: We report significant speckle reduction in a laser illumination system using a vibrating multimode optical fiber bundle. The optical fiber bundle was illuminated by two independent lasers simultaneously. The beams from both lasers were first expanded and collimated and were further divided into multiple beams to illuminate the fiber optic bundle with normal and oblique incidence. Static diffusers were also placed at the input and output faces of the fiber bundle, thus introducing the spatial as well as angular diversity of illumination. Experiments were carried out both in free space and in imaging geometry configuration. Standard deviation, speckle contrast and signal-to-noise ratio of the images were computed, and the results were compared with those of white light illumination. Speckle contrast close to that of white light was obtained using a vibrating fiber bundle with combined temporal, spatial, and angular diversities of the illumination.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used speckle pattern interferometry to measure both harmonic vibration and transient deformation in real-time with microsecond temporal resolution for the first time.
Abstract: To the best of our knowledge, transient deformations have been measured in real time with microsecond temporal resolution for the first time with speckle pattern interferometry. The short exposure period and high framing rate of a high-speed camera at as many as 40,500 frames per second allow low-power continuous-wave laser illumination and fiber-optic beam delivery to be used. We have applied the technique to measure both harmonic vibration and transient deformation.
