Abstract: The authors propose and formally define the concept of multilevel signal abstractions as an organizational principle for real-world signal processing software that requires both algorithmic and heuristic techniques. As an example, they have implemented a set of signal abstractions, the extended spectrum, for harmonic spectra. The extended spectrum is shown to be useful in a variety of problems associated with harmonic spectra. For example, the focus in spectral estimation is often on adjusting parameters to maximize the 'peakness' of harmonically related peaks. It is demonstrated that this can be conveniently performed by taking advantage of the multiple abstraction levels of the extended spectrum representation. The extended spectrum can also be used to represent explicitly the evolution of harmonic spectra over time. To illustrate this concept, the authors have implemented a helicopter pitch and power tracking system. >

TL;DR: This work proposes a compressive estimator of the discrete Rihaczek spectrum (RS), which combines a minimum variance unbiased estimators of the RS with a compressed sensing technique that exploits the approximate time-frequency sparsity.
Abstract: We propose a “compressive” estimator of the Wigner-Ville spectrum (WVS) for time-frequency sparse, underspread, nonstationary random processes. A novel WVS estimator involving the signal's Gabor coefficients on an undersampled time-frequency grid is combined with a compressed sensing transformation in order to reduce the number of measurements required. The performance of the compressive WVS estimator is analyzed via a bound on the mean square error and through simulations. We also propose an efficient implementation using a special construction of the measurement matrix.

TL;DR: A new nonparametric iterative adaptive approach that provides a solution to the problem of estimating the spectral content of exponentially decaying signals from a set of irregularly sampled data and the damping coefficient, or linewidth, is explicitly modeled, which allows for an improved estimation performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, an optical information processing system including a variable electro-optic spatial filter including an electrooptic medium having a characteristic that varies as a function of the intensity of an associated electric field is described.
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed including an optical information processing system including a variable electro-optic spatial filter including an electro-optic medium having a characteristic that varies as a function of the intensity of an associated electric field, means for applying an electric field to the electro-optic medium, means for providing to the electro-optic medium a first Fourier transform of radiation representative of information to be processed, means for varying the intensity of the associated electric field to vary the characteristic of the electro-optic medium in a predetermined pattern for modulating information of predetermined spatial frequency included in the first Fourier transform, to produce a modified form of the first Fourier transform, and means for providing a second Fourier transform of the modified form of the first Fourier transform to reproduce a replica of the radiation representative of information to be processed with information of predetermined spatial frequency modified in accordance with the intensity pattern of the associated electric field.
