TL;DR: The transport properties of a series-coupled double quantum dot as electrons are added one by one onto the dots are reported as a splitting of the Kondo resonance peak in the differential conductance.
Abstract: Double quantum dots provide an ideal model system for studying interactions between localized impurity spins. We report on the transport properties of a series-coupled double quantum dot as electrons are added one by one onto the dots. When the many-body molecular states are formed, we observe a splitting of the Kondo resonance peak in the differential conductance. This splitting reflects the energy difference between the bonding and antibonding states formed by the coherent superposition of the Kondo states of each dot. The occurrence of the Kondo resonance and its magnetic field dependence agree with a simple interpretation of the spin status of a double quantum dot.

TL;DR: In this article, a general method of describing the spin-lattice interactions in magnetic solids is proposed in terms of first-principles calculations, and the ground-state structure of a representative spin-frustrated spinel is tetragonally distorted, in agreement with experiments.
Abstract: A novel general method of describing the spin-lattice interactions in magnetic solids is proposed in terms of first-principles calculations. The spin exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, as well as their derivatives with respect to atomic displacements, can be evaluated efficiently on the basis of density-functional calculations for four ordered spin states. By taking into consideration the spin-spin interactions, the phonons, and the coupling between them, we show that the ground-state structure of a representative spin-frustrated spinel, MgCr${}_{2}$O${}_{4}$, is tetragonally distorted, in agreement with experiments. However, our calculations find the lowest energy for the collinear spin ground state, in contrast to previously suggested noncollinear models.

TL;DR: It is found that skyrmions can exist in such a gas only as a metastable state, but with a lifetime comparable to (or even longer than) the typical lifetime of the condensate itself.
Abstract: Multi-component Bose–Einstein condensates1,2,3 provide opportunities to explore experimentally the wealth of physics associated with the spin degrees of freedom4,5,6,7. The ground-state properties8,9,10,11 and line-like vortex excitations8,12,13 of these quantum systems have been studied theoretically. In principle, nontrivial spin textures consisting of point-like topological excitations, or skyrmions14,15, could exist in a multi-component Bose–Einstein condensate, owing to the superfluid nature of the gas. Although skyrmion excitations are already known in the context of nuclear physics and the quantum-Hall effect, creating these excitations in an atomic condensate would offer an opportunity to study their physical behaviour in much greater detail, while also enabling an ab initio comparison between theory and experiment. Here we investigate theoretically the stability of skyrmions in a fictitious spin-1/2 condensate of 87Rb atoms. We find that skyrmions can exist in such a gas only as a metastable state, but with a lifetime comparable to (or even longer than) the typical lifetime of the condensate itself.
