TL;DR: In intrinsic graphene, the Dyakonov-Perel mechanism and spin flip due to gauge fields dominate and the spin-flip relaxation time is inversely proportional to the elastic scattering time.
Abstract: We investigate how spins relax in intrinsic graphene. The spin-orbit coupling arises from the band structure and is enhanced by ripples. The orbital motion is influenced by scattering centers and ripple-induced gauge fields. Spin relaxation due to Elliot-Yafet and Dyakonov-Perel mechanisms and gauge fields in combination with spin-orbit coupling are discussed. In intrinsic graphene, the Dyakonov-Perel mechanism and spin flip due to gauge fields dominate and the spin-flip relaxation time is inversely proportional to the elastic scattering time. The spin-relaxation anisotropy depends on an intricate competition between these mechanisms. Experimental consequences are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the band structures of a series of quaternary LiMgPdSn-type Heusler compounds and revealed a semi-empirical general rule for indentifying spin gapless semiconductors.
Abstract: By using first-principles calculations, we investigate the band structures of a series of quaternary LiMgPdSn-type Heusler compounds. Our calculation results show that five compounds, CoFeMnSi, CoFeCrAl, CoMnCrSi, CoFeVSi and FeMnCrSb, possess unique electronic structures characterized by a half-metallic gap in one spin direction while they have a zero-width gap in the other spin direction showing a spin gapless semiconducting behavior. We further analyse the electronic and magnetic properties of all quaternary Heusler alloys involved, and reveal a semi-empirical general rule (the total valence electrons number should be 26 or 28) for indentifying spin gapless semiconductors in Heusler compounds. The influences of lattice distortion and main-group element change have also been discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, an all-electrical spintronic device at room temperature with the creation, transport and control of the spin in 2D materials heterostructures is presented.
Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) crystals offer a unique platform due to their remarkable and contrasting spintronic properties, such as weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in graphene and strong SOC in molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). Here we combine graphene and MoS2 in a van der Waals heterostructure (vdWh) to demonstrate the electric gate control of the spin current and spin lifetime at room temperature. By performing non-local spin valve and Hanle measurements, we unambiguously prove the gate tunability of the spin current and spin lifetime in graphene/MoS2 vdWhs at 300 K. This unprecedented control over the spin parameters by orders of magnitude stems from the gate tuning of the Schottky barrier at the MoS2/graphene interface and MoS2 channel conductivity leading to spin dephasing in high-SOC material. Our findings demonstrate an all-electrical spintronic device at room temperature with the creation, transport and control of the spin in 2D materials heterostructures, which can be key building blocks in future device architectures.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the weakest form of the Identity of Indiscernibles is violated for bosons, fermions and higher-order paraparticles, treated in first quantization.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the question of whether atomic particles of the same species, i.e. with the same intrinsic state-independent properties of mass, spin, electric charge, etc, violate the Leibnizian Principle of the Identity of Indiscernibles, in the sense that, while there is more than one of them, their state-dependent properties may also all be the same. The answer depends on what exactly the statedependent properties of atomic particles are taken to be. On the plausible interpretation that these should comprise all monadic and relational properties that can be expressed in terms of physical magnitudes associated with self-adjoint operators that can be defined for the individual particles, then the weakest form of the Principle is shown to be violated for bosons, fermions and higher-order paraparticles, treated in first quantization.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the spin lifetime does not depend on the contact resistance area products when comparing all bottom-up devices indicating that spin absorption at the contacts is not the predominant source for spin dephasing.
Abstract: We show spin lifetimes of 12.6 ns and spin diffusion lengths as long as 30.5 μm in single layer graphene nonlocal spin transport devices at room temperature. This is accomplished by the fabrication of Co/MgO-electrodes on a Si/SiO2 substrate and the subsequent dry transfer of a graphene-hBN-stack on top of this electrode structure where a large hBN flake is needed in order to diminish the ingress of solvents along the hBN-to-substrate interface. Interestingly, long spin lifetimes are observed despite the fact that both conductive scanning force microscopy and contact resistance measurements reveal the existence of conducting pinholes throughout the MgO spin injection/detection barriers. Compared to previous devices, we observe an enhancement of the spin lifetime in single layer graphene by a factor of 6. We demonstrate that the spin lifetime does not depend on the contact resistance area products when comparing all bottom-up devices indicating that spin absorption at the contacts is not the predominant so...
