TL;DR: In this paper, the microstructural evolution during refill friction stir spot welding of an AlMgSc alloy was studied and the primary texture that developed in all regions, with the exception of the weld center, was determined to be 〈110〉 fibers and interpreted as a simple shear texture with the direction aligned with the shear direction.
Abstract: The microstructural evolution during refill friction stir spot welding of an AlMgSc alloy was studied. The primary texture that developed in all regions, with the exception of the weld center, was determined to be 〈110〉 fibers and interpreted as a simple shear texture with the 〈110〉 direction aligned with the shear direction. The material flow is mainly driven by two components: the simple shear acting on the horizontal plane causing an inward-directed spiral flow and the extrusion acting on the vertical plane causing an upward-directed or downward-directed flow. Under such a complex material flow, the weld center, which is subjected to minimal local strain, is the least recrystallized. In addition to the geometric effects of strain and grain subdivision, thermally activated high-angle grain boundary migration, particularly continuous dynamic recrystallization, drives the formation of refined grains in the stirred zone.

TL;DR: In this paper, a spot welding method was proposed to provide a method by which the welding strength of piled works by using a plate material having the lowest rigidity in three plate materials at one side.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spot welding method by which the welding strength of piled works by using a plate material having the lowest rigidity in three plate materials at one side. SOLUTION: In the spot welding method by interposing the work W1 piling the thin plate 32 having low rigidity on the thick plates 30, 31 having high rigidity with one pair of electrode ships 5, 8, a contacting area of the thin plate 32 with the electrode chip 8 is made to smaller than a contacting area of the thick plate 30 with the electrode chip 5 by making the tip end diameter of the electrode chip 8 abutted on the thin plate 32 having the lowest rigidity to smaller than the tip end diameter of the electrode chip 5 abutting on the thick plate 30. TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus are disclosed for analyzing the dynamic resistance of a resistance spot welding process to determine the time of an expulsion event and use that time as the weld completion time for controlling weld termination via a weld feedback signal, controlling automatic current stepping, and identifying maintenance needs.
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for analyzing the dynamic resistance of a resistance spot welding process to determine the time of an expulsion event and use that time as the weld completion time for controlling weld termination via a weld feedback signal, controlling automatic current stepping, and identifying maintenance needs. A preconditioning pulse is used to stabilize the weld process and aid in obtaining interpretable resistance information. After an initial blanking period the resistance curve is analyzed by calculating first and second derivative values and applying several algorithms that make possible the computer recognition of characteristic resistance curve shapes resulting from weld expulsion under good geometry, bad geometry and edge weld conditions.
