TL;DR: In this paper, a stair climbing vehicle consisting of side members mounting a driven axle 26, there being rotatably mounted on each end of the axle a spider 34 with a wheel 36 on each arm 35 thereof, and the wheels of each spider are rotationally connected by a chain 44 with one wheel driven by an electric motor 58 through a clutch 59, chain 62 and differential 56.
Abstract: 1,213,930. Stair climbing vehicle; vehicle wheels; motor vehicles. J. F. FLEMING. 29 May, 1969, No. 27270/69. Headings B7C, B7D and B7H. A stair climbing vehicle comprises side members 12 mounting a driven axle 26, there being rotatably mounted on each end of the axle a spider 34 with a wheel 36 on each arm 35 thereof, and the wheels of each spider are rotationally connected by a chain 44 with one wheel driven by a chain 52 from the axle 26, the arrangement providing rotation of a spider when one wheel thereof is restrained against rotation. The driving force is provided by an electric motor 58 through a clutch 59, chain 62 and differential 56. On level ground the wheels 36 are each driven about their axles 40 to propel the vehicle but to negotiate a step when the forward ground wheel contacts the riser thereof, the driving force will cause the complete spiders to rotate about the axle 26. A hand brake 28 is provided.
