Abstract: The influence of annealing atmosphere and surface finish of cold-rolled steel on the occurrence of galling during stamping operations has been noted empirically for many years. In order to minimize the galling tendencies of drawing quality sheets a program was carried out to define pertinent surface features and their interaction during stamping. Commercial steel coils were processed in two types of annealing atmospheres, a hydrogen and nitrogen mixture (HN) and DX-type exothermic gas. The coils were then skin rolled to achieve a wide range of surface roughness. The sensitivity to galling was rated during the stamping of quarter panels and also by means of a sliding friction test in which the ratio of static to dynamic drawing force was used to designate a friction ratio that appeared to correlate well with performance. Surface finish was recorded by standard profilometry techniques, and chemical differences between the types of surfaces were examined by auger electron spectrometry; general aspects of the surfaces were studied by scanning electron microscopy. The critical frictional ratio was found to be 1.3, above which sheet steel has galling tendencies. Galling in HN-annealed steel was found to be surface-finish sensitive, and a range of surface finish parameters for nongalling characteristics has been established. DX-annealed steel appeared to be insensitive to the effects of surface finish, and differences in surface films were detected to account for the frictional changes.

TL;DR: In this paper, a row of location holes is pierced in each strip along a central line, such that the distance between the end location hole in one strip and the corresponding hole in the next strip is exactly equal to twice the pitch of the holes in each row.
Abstract: The method of manufacturing end caps for cans begins with cutting zig-zag strips (2) from large sheets. A row of location holes is pierced in each strip along a central line. The strips are then joined together end to end by tack welding. The dimensions of each strip are such that, after welding, the distance between the end location hole in one strip and the corresponding hole in the next stri is exactly equal to twice the pitch of the holes in each row. This spacing of the location holes enables the continuous strip formed by welding to be fed into a blanking press for stamping the circular blanks of the end caps.

TL;DR: A sheet folding or bending machine has the surface of the bend stamped at the bottom along a straight line at right angles to its length, made radially to a parallel shaft on the same side of the sheet as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A sheet folding or bending machine has the surface of the bend stamped at the bottom along a straight line at right angles to its length, made radially to a parallel shaft on the same side of the sheet. The suspension elements are spaced closely together before the start of this stamping action, with corrugations which interlock so as to allow the inside of the sheet to bend. This process is repeated until the required bending angle is obtained, and the sheet is released each time by swinging the suspension elements through a predetermined angle. This angle is a sub-multiple of the bend angle required.

TL;DR: In this paper, an adjustable and displaceable stop with a damping cylinder is used for stamping strips of material in profile machines, in which the working and cutting lengths are adjustable by means of a repeater selector, using a separating slide with a material driver.
Abstract: Installation for the repetitive stamping or separation of strips of material in profile machines, in which the working and cutting lengths are adjustable by means of a repeater selector, uses a separating slide with a saw operated by a material driver. The driver takes the form of an adjustable and displaceable stop, and is acted upon by damping cylinder which tends to slow it down, and which, after the machining process, acts as return cylinder. The driver(1), by switching on an accelerator drive cylinder(5), exceeds the throughflow speed of the material(7) to be worked, and then, by means of the damping cylinder (10), is brought back to the same speed as the material running through the machine.
