TL;DR: In this article, a rotary die stamper is used to accelerate a continuous sheet of metal leaf to a constant rate by contact between the metal leaf sheet and a raised die rotating at the velocity of the substrate web.
Abstract: A continuous sheet 27 of metal leaf advanced at a constant rate is moved at variable velocity through a rotary die stamper 6, 7 such that between stamps the metal leaf moves at a velocity which is slower than the velocity of a substrate web 28; but just prior to stamping the metal leaf is accelerated by contact between the metal leaf sheet and a raised die 5 rotating at the velocity of the substrate web so that when the stamp occurs the metal leaf sheet is travelling at a velocity substantially equal to the velocity of the substrate web. Varying the velocity of the metal leaf sheet has the effect of minimising the distance the metal leaf sheet travels between stamps which conserves consumption of the metal leaf sheet. Separate means for accelerating the leaf sheet prior to stamping and decelerating the leaf sheet after stamping may also be provided.

Abstract: An air bladder is formed by producing a foil imprint on an inner surface of a first uncured rubber sheet, by heat pressing the imprint from a hot roll leaf stamping tape to the sheet. The first sheet is delivered from a reel to the heat press via a driven roller and idler roller combination. The hot roll leaf stamping tape is delivered above the first sheet via a take up reel and idler roller combination. The heating press includes a heated platen having the contour of the desired imprint, such that the imprint takes on the shape of the heated platen. A second sheet of uncured rubber is laminated to the first sheet, with the second sheet laminated over the first sheet, thereby convering the imprint. The two sheets are vulcanized which cures the non-imprinted surfaces of the rubber sheets together, thereby forming an air pocket in the shape of the imprint between the two sheets.

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the evolution of sheet metal forming from a craft based into a science-based technology is presented, with examples of methods used in the first phase of application of finite element modelling techniques, to press forming operations which involve stretching and deep drawing over metal tools at ambient temperatures.
Abstract: Recent progress in the evolution of sheet metal forming from a craft based into a science based technology is reviewed. Examples of methods used in the first phase of application of finite element modelling techniques, to press forming operations which involve stretching and deep drawing over metal tools at ambient temperatures, are considered from the viewpoint of the user, rather than that of the programme designer. Because the interactions between material and process variables which influence performance in sheet forming are exceptionally complex, the requirements for accurate modelling can be very demanding. In some applications, knowledge of the plastic behaviour of the material and of frictional conditions is not yet sufficient to meet the requirements for accurate prediction. Recent experimental and theoretical work which is aimed at refining descriptions of plastic behaviour and of frictional conditions is outlined. It is expected that the degree of elaboration in constitutive equations ...

TL;DR: In this paper, a printed circuit type panel with stamped out conductors is produced by stamping out the conductors from metal strip but leaving them still joined to the strip by bridging pieces.
Abstract: A printed circuit type panel with stamped out conductors is produced by (a) stamping out the conductors from metal strip but leaving them still joined to the strip by bridging pieces; (b) feeding the stamped out strip into an injection mould; (c) closing the mould so that the conductors are cut by piercing tools and are held onto them; (d) cutting off at least the inner bridging pieces with a punch tool; and (e) encapsulating the conductors by injection moulding. A metal strip (15) is advanced from the right to the left and into a stamping station where the conductors (17,18,19) are cut out but remain connected by the attaching bridges (31,32) together and to the strip (15). Terminal pieces (33) are also formed. The strip (15) is next moved into the injection mould. When the mould tools close, piercing tools (35) and cutters enter the strip (15) to complete the cuts concerned. The conductors are then held by the piercing tools (35) and the inner conductors are separated off from the bridging pieces by the cuts (32). Thermoplastic polymer is injected to fill in the gaps. ADVANTAGE - The method is automatic, accurate and economical.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the development of an ultrasonic instrument to measure texture (preferred grain orientation), stress, and related physical properties in metal sheets in industrial environments.
Abstract: This paper describes the development of an ultrasonic instrument to measure texture (preferred grain orientation), stress, and related physical properties in metal sheets in industrial environments. The technique is based on precise measurements of the speed of guided modes, including angular variations, and is made practical by the use of EMAT transducers, which require no couplant. The instrument is expected to find important initial applications in predicting sheet metal formability, either as a process control tool in the rolling mill or as a quality control tool in a stamping shop. Since the instrument will offer an improved measurement capability not presently available to industry, a much broader range of applications may develop, including measurements of stress and porosity in sheet and other simple geometries.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for progressively making a model of a sheet metal assembly composed of several connected sheet metal panels, or model of several interfitting sheet metal assemblies, is presented.
Abstract: A method for progressively making a model of a sheet metal assembly composed of several connected sheet metal panels, or a model of several interfitting sheet metal assemblies. Each sheet metal panel is represented by a carbon fiber sheet formed between a pair of blocks machined to form a cavity corresponding to the thickness of the sheet metal. The thickness is initially represented by a wax layer corresponding to the thickness of the sheet metal. The wax layer is removed and replaced by a carbon fiber epoxy-based material. One of the blocks is then used to form the replica of a second panel of the sheet metal, adjacent the first panel. The process is repeated until replicas of all panels have been made. The carbon fiber replicas are attached to one another to form the completed model of the sheet metal assembly or a model of several interfitting sheet metal assemblies. The machined foam blocks may be used as tooling aids for forming dies for stamping the sheet metal components.
