TL;DR: In this paper, an improved optimal sizing method for wind-solar-battery hybrid power system (WSB-HPS), considering the system working in stand-alone and grid-connected modes, is proposed.
Abstract: This paper proposes an improved optimal sizing method for wind-solar-battery hybrid power system (WSB-HPS), considering the system working in stand-alone and grid-connected modes. The proposed method is based on the following principles: a) high power supply reliability; b) full utilization of the complementary characteristics of wind and solar; c) small fluctuation of power injected into the grid; d) optimization of the battery's charge and discharge state; e) minimization of the total cost of system. Compared with the traditional methods, the proposed method can achieve a higher power supply reliability while require less battery capacity in stand-alone mode. And in grid-connected mode, the optimization strategy based on energy filter is further utilized to achieve the optimal battery capacity. Thus, the proposed method can achieve a much smaller fluctuation of power injected into the grid. In addition, the battery's charge and discharge state can be optimized thanks to the consideration of the battery's depth of discharge (DOD), the charge/discharge current, rate and cycles, which will prolong the battery's lifetime. A case study of WSB-HPS located in Hohhot, China is presented to verify the advantages of the proposed optimal sizing method.

TL;DR: In this article, an aggregated electric vehicle (EV)-based battery storage representing a V2G system is modeled for the use in long-term dynamic power system simulations, and the results show that the regulation needs from conventional generators and the power deviations between West Denmark and Union for the Coordination of Electricity Transmission (UCTE) control areas are significantly minimized by the faster up and down regulation characteristics of the EV battery storage.
Abstract: The Danish power system is characterized by a large penetration of wind power. As the nature of the wind power is unpredictable, more balancing power is desired for a stable and reliable operation of the power system. The present balancing power in Denmark is provided mostly by the large central power plants followed by a number of decentralized combined heat and power units and connections from abroad. The future energy plans in Denmark aim for 50% wind power capacity integration which will replace many conventional large power plant units. The limited control and regulation power capabilities of large power plants in the future demands for new balancing solutions like vehicle-to-grid (V2G) systems. In this paper, aggregated electric vehicle (EV)-based battery storage representing a V2G system is modeled for the use in long-term dynamic power system simulations. Further, it is analyzed for power system regulation services for typical days with high and low wind production in the Western Danish power system. The results show that the regulation needs from conventional generators and the power deviations between West Denmark and Union for the Coordination of Electricity Transmission (UCTE) control areas are significantly minimized by the faster up and down regulation characteristics of the EV battery storage.

TL;DR: The paper shows that the application of this novel sensorless current flyback inverter to an MPPT-operated PV system exhibits satisfactory MPPT performance similar to the one exhibited by the system with a dc current sensor as well.
Abstract: This paper presents a flyback inverter controlled by sensorless current maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for a small photovoltaic (PV) power system. Although the proposed system has small output power such as 300 W, a few sets of small PV power systems can be easily connected in parallel to yield higher output power. When a PV power system is constructed with a number of small power systems, the total system cost will increase and will be a matter of concern. To overcome this difficulty, this paper proposes a PV system that uses no expensive dc current sensor but utilizes the method of estimating the PV current from the PV voltage. The paper shows that the application of this novel sensorless current flyback inverter to an MPPT-operated PV system exhibits satisfactory MPPT performance similar to the one exhibited by the system with a dc current sensor as well. This paper also deals with the design method and the operation of the unique flyback inverter with center-tapped secondary winding.

TL;DR: This paper provides a general framework within which to analyse the Nash equilibrium of an electricity grid and devise new agent-based storage learning strategies that adapt to market conditions and shows that in the UK electricity market, it is possible to achieve savings of up to 13% on average for a consumer on his electricity bill with a storage device of 4 kWh.
Abstract: The use of energy storage devices in homes has been advocated as one of the main ways of saving energy and reducing the reliance on fossil fuels in the future Smart Grid. However, if micro-storage devices are all charged at the same time using power from the electricity grid, it means a higher demand and, hence, requires more generation capacity, results in more carbon emissions, and, in the worst case, breaks down the system due to over-demand. To alleviate such issues, in this paper, we present a novel agent-based micro-storage management technique that allows all (individually-owned) storage devices in the system to converge to profitable, efficient behaviour. Specifically, we provide a general framework within which to analyse the Nash equilibrium of an electricity grid and devise new agent-based storage learning strategies that adapt to market conditions. Taken altogether, our solution shows that, specifically, in the UK electricity market, it is possible to achieve savings of up to 13% on average for a consumer on his electricity bill with a storage device of 4 kWh. Moreover, we show that there exists an equilibrium where only 38% of UK households would own storage devices and where social welfare would be also maximised (with an overall annual savings of nearly GBP 1.5B at that equilibrium).
