Abstract: This paper presents a buck-boost PWM power inverter and its application for residential photovoltaic power systems. The PWM power inverter is realized by combining two sets of high frequency buck-boost choppers and by making them operate in the discontinuous conduction mode. A PV power system with the power inverter has the following advantages: (1) the power generated by the photovoltaic array can be transferred to the load and the utility line under any array voltage; (2) isolation between the photovoltaic array and the utility line is performed by a small high frequency reactor operating as energy storage element; (3) unity power factor operation is provided; (4) there is no need of a reactor for interconnection with the utility line; and (5) so the system configuration is very simple. The input-output characteristics of the system are analyzed. As a result, the ripple component of the array current and the power flow between the interface and the utility line are derived and verified experimentally.

TL;DR: In this article, a hybrid clean-energy power-supply framework integrates a fuel cell, solar cell, and wind energy, applies a max power tracking rule, raises the output power of a solar cell to supply a power load and transfer the surplus electrical energy to a water-electrolyzing apparatus for producing hydrogen and oxygen, and provides a fuel for a fuel-cell power generating system.
Abstract: A hybrid clean-energy power-supply framework integrates a fuel cell, solar cell, and wind energy, applies a max power tracking rule, raises the output power of a solar cell and wind energy to supply a power load and transfer the surplus electrical energy to a water-electrolyzing apparatus for producing hydrogen and oxygen, and provides a fuel for a fuel cell power generating system. Furthermore, the present invention utilizes features of each clean-energy power generating system, depends on the powerful calculation capacity of a central processing unit to monitor and dispatch each power generation and supply system, and thus ensures the reliability of supply power and reduces the power generation cost. Such a framework can selectively grid-connect with the utility power or run as a stand-alone power supply system and has a mechanism for preventing the island effect.

Abstract: This study examines the use of superconducting magnetic and battery hybrid energy storage to compensate grid voltage fluctuations. The superconducting magnetic energy storage system (SMES) has been emulated by a high-current inductor to investigate a system employing both SMES and battery energy storage experimentally. The design of the laboratory prototype is described in detail, which consists of a series-connected three phase voltage source inverter used to regulate ac voltage, and two bidirectional dc/dc converters used to control energy storage system charge and discharge. “DC bus level signaling” and “voltage droop control” have been used to automatically control power from the magnetic energy storage system during short-duration, high-power voltage sags, while the battery is used to provide power during longer term, low-power undervoltages. Energy storage system hybridization is shown to be advantageous by reducing battery peak power demand compared with a battery-only system, and by improving long-term voltage support capability compared with an SMES-only system. Consequently, the SMES/battery hybrid dynamic voltage restorer can support both short-term high-power voltage sags and long-term undervoltages with significantly reduced superconducting material cost compared with an SMES-based system.

TL;DR: This paper presents the automatic reactive power control of isolated wind-diesel hybrid power systems having a permanent-magnet induction generator for a wind energy conversion system and a synchronous generators for a diesel generator set.
Abstract: This paper presents the automatic reactive power control of isolated wind-diesel hybrid power systems having a permanent-magnet induction generator for a wind energy conversion system and a synchronous generator for a diesel generator set. To minimize the gap between reactive power generation and demand, a variable source of reactive power is used such as a static synchronous compensator. The mathematical model of the system used for simulation is based on small-signal analysis. Three examples of the wind-diesel hybrid power system are considered with different wind power generation capacities to study the effect of the wind power generation on the system performance. This paper also shows the dynamic performance of the hybrid system with and without change in input wind power plus 1% step increase in reactive power load.
