Abstract: This study investigates two methods of transforming intermittent wind electricity into firm baseload capacity: (1) using electricity from natural gas combined-cycle (NGCC) power plants and (2) using electricity from compressed air energy storage (CAES) power plants. The two wind models are compared in terms of capital and electricity costs, CO2 emissions, and fuel consumption rates. The findings indicate that the combination of wind and NGCC power plants is the lowest-cost method of transforming wind electricity into firm baseload capacity power supply at current natural gas prices (∼$6/GJ). However, the electricity supplied by wind and CAES power plants becomes economically competitive when the cost of natural gas for electric producers is $10.55/GJ or greater. In addition, the Wind-CAES system has the lowest CO2 emissions (93% and 71% lower than pulverized coal power plants and Wind-NGCC, respectively) and the lowest fuel consumption rates (9 and 4 times lower than pulverized coal power plants and Wind-NGCC, respectively). As such, the large-scale introduction of Wind-CAES systems in the U.S. appears to be the prudent long-term choice once natural gas price volatility, costs, and climate impacts are all considered.

Abstract: With a still increase of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems, challenges have been imposed on the grid due to the continuous injection of a large amount of fluctuating PV power, like overloading the grid infrastructure (e.g., transformers) during peak power production periods. Hence, advanced active power control methods are required. As a cost-effective solution to avoid overloading, a constant power generation (CPG) control scheme by limiting the feed-in power has been introduced into the currently active grid regulations. In order to achieve a CPG operation, this paper presents three CPG strategies based on a power control method (P-CPG), a current limit method (I-CPG), and the perturb and observe algorithm (P&O-CPG). However, the operational mode changes (e.g., from the maximum power point tracking to a CPG operation) will affect the entire system performance. Thus, a benchmarking of the presented CPG strategies is also conducted on a 3-kW single-phase grid-connected PV system. Comparisons reveal that either the P-CPG or I-CPG strategies can achieve fast dynamics and satisfactory steady-state performance. In contrast, the P&O-CPG algorithm is the most suitable solution in terms of high robustness, but it presents poor dynamic performance.

Abstract: This paper studies pumped storage plants (PSPs) operating all over the EU, in which the key statistical indicators can be found in the European Hydropower database (HYDI), administered and managed by the European Small Hydropower Association (ESHA). The main emphasis is on mixed-type PSPs, which generate electricity from natural inflow; however, pure PSP plants are included in this study. Different analysed, independent PSP data sources (e.g., Eurostat, Eurelectric) show a great variation in the main statistical values (installed capacity and power generation) of the EU pumped storage plant fleet. Presented and analysed PSP layouts and a clear methodology for determining renewable electricity generation from mixed pumped storage plants will avoid ambiguities that actually pertain to power databases to clearly separate renewable and non-renewable electricity generation. Most of the National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAP) submitted to the European Commission do not correctly account for renewable electricity generation due to natural inflow into upper basins of PSPs. Moreover, renewable and non-renewable electricity generation types are mixed up. The operating mixed PSP installed capacity and electricity generation were determined in the EU countries, which is a type of renewable source, and their projected estimates in 2020 are provided.

Abstract: Electricity is an essential part of our way of life. Most of the electricity is currently provided from the conventional thermal or hydro power stations. With the growing concern about the greenhouse gas emission and other environmental issues the renewable energy technologies such as photovoltaic cells are increasingly being recommended for electricity production. In this paper, the simulation of a grid-connected solar photovoltaic system is presented with the use of the computer software package PVsyst and their performance was evaluated. The performance ratio and the various types of power losses (temperature, internal network, power electronics) are calculated. From the results, the viability of installing 1 MW solar photo voltaic (PV) power plant is discussed by comparing solar energy production and life cycle cost of some of the places in southern region of Tamilnadu.
