TL;DR: In this paper, a control strategy for managing the demand-generation fluctuations using a hybrid energy storage system in a wind-dominated remote area power supply (RAPS) system consisting of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), a battery storage system, a supercapacitor, a dump load, and main loads is presented.
Abstract: This paper presents a control strategy for managing the demand-generation fluctuations using a hybrid energy storage system in a wind-dominated remote area power supply (RAPS) system consisting of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), a battery storage system, a supercapacitor, a dump load, and main loads. Operation of a battery storage system is coordinated with a supercapacitor with a view to improving the performance of the battery. In this regard, the battery storage system is connected to the load side of the RAPS system, whereas the supercapacitor is connected to the dc bus of the back-to-back converter of the DFIG. The operation of the hybrid energy storage system is coordinated through the implementation of a power management algorithm, which is developed with a view to reducing the depth of discharge and ripple content of the battery current. In addition, the dump load is connected to the load side of the RAPS system, which utilizes the power in situations that cannot be handled via an energy storage system. In addition, a coordination method has been developed and proposed to coordinate the power flows among all system components with a view to regulating the power flow and thereby ensuring the robust voltage and frequency control on the load side while capturing the maximum power from wind.

TL;DR: This paper explores how to lower electric bills without requiring consumer involvement using an intelligent charging system, called SmartCharge, and an on-site battery array to store low-cost energy for use during high-cost periods.
Abstract: Market-based electricity pricing provides consumers an opportunity to lower their electric bill by shifting consumption to low price periods. In this paper, we explore how to lower electric bills without requiring consumer involvement using an intelligent charging system, called SmartCharge, and an on-site battery array to store low-cost energy for use during high-cost periods. SmartCharge's algorithm reduces electricity costs by determining when to switch the home's power supply between the grid and the battery array. The algorithm leverages a prediction model we develop, which forecasts future demand using statistical machine learning techniques. We evaluate SmartCharge in simulation using data from real homes to quantify its potential to lower bills in a range of scenarios. We show that typical savings today are 10-15%, but increase linearly with rising electricity prices. We also find that SmartCharge deployed at only 22% of 435 homes reduces the aggregate demand peak by 20%. Finally, we analyze SmartCharge's installation and maintenance costs. Our analysis shows that battery advancements, combined with an expected rise in electricity prices, have the potential to make the return on investment positive for the average home within the next few years.

TL;DR: In this article, a deeper understanding of the potential impacts of wind generation facilities on the interaction with the bulk electric power system is provided, with individual wind power plants approaching the output rating of conventional power plants.
Abstract: Large-scale wind generation facilities have become a very visible component of the interconnected power grid in many options of the United States. Only a decade ago, wind generation facilities were viewed by most power engineers as a novelty, and by simple engineering judgement, it could be safely concluded that the effects of these unique but smaller facilities on system reliability would be negligible. Now, with individual wind generation facilities approaching the output rating of conventional power plants, a deeper understanding of their potential impacts on the interaction with the bulk electric power system is needed.
