Abstract: The integrated starter generator/alternator (ISG or ISA) uses one machine to replace conventional starter and alternator onboard vehicles. Its stop/restart function and vehicle launch assistance etc helps reduce the fuel consumption and emissions and enhance vehicle performance. The ISA machine is required providing high cranking and launch assistant torque at motoring state and supplying constant voltage to charge the battery at wide speed range. Different electric machines are reviewed and compared in selection of the machines for the ISA applications. The design and operation guidelines of the candidate machine are also given in order to meet the ISA system specifications. Useful conclusions benefit to the development of the ISA technology.

Abstract: An aircraft starting and generating system includes a starter/generator that includes a main machine, an exciter, and a permanent magnet generator. The system also includes an inverter/converter/controller that is connected to the starter/generator and that generates AC power to drive the starter/generator in a start mode for starting a prime mover of the aircraft, and that converts AC power, obtained from the starter/generator after the prime mover have been started, to DC power in a generate mode of the starter/generator. The exciter includes a stator and a rotor, and wherein the exciter rotor includes a three-phase AC winding.

Abstract: A hybrid electric vehicle is arranged such that a driving force of an electric motor can be transmitted to driving wheels and that a rotary shaft of the electric motor can be coupled with an output shaft of an engine. The vehicle comprises a starter motor provided separately from the electric motor, an electric power source provided separately from a battery that supplies power to the electric motor, to supply power to the starter motor, and a braking force maintaining device configured to be activated by power from the power source to maintain a braking force on the vehicle. When a request for starting the engine is made, if a specified abnormal condition which makes the starting of the engine by the electric motor impracticable is detected, an ECU causes the engine to be started by the starter motor when the braking force maintaining device is not active.

Abstract: A self-latching solenoid actuator having a low power consumption and an internal switching arrangement whereby latching and unlatching may be accomplished by such means as a simple singlepole, double-throw remote switch. The solenoid has a permanent magnet in the magnetic circuit thereof so that an actuating current in a first direction will actuate the solenoid and charge the permanent magnet, and a smaller current in the opposite direction will de-magnetize the permanent magnet and allow a return spring to force the plunger to the fully extended position. A single-pole, double-throw switch electrically coupled to the solenoid coil is disposed adjacent the magnetic circuit and mechanically coupled to the solenoid plunger. The switch is coupled in the circuit so as to be operative to turn off the actuating current and the unlatching current as the plunger approaches the latched and unlatched positions respectively, and to re-connect the solenoid coil in preparation for the next operating signal.
