TL;DR: In this article, a virtualization layer within a stateless cloud computing process is used to capture, store, and retrieve state information generated by a stateful application executing within the process.
Abstract: A cloud computing environment may use a virtualization layer within a stateless cloud computing process to capture, store, and retrieve state information generated by a stateful application executing within the process. The virtualization layer may monitor various state storage systems to identify changes to stateful items and store the stateful items in a state storage mechanism. The virtualization layer may intercept and redirect calls to the stateful items stored in the state storage mechanism. A cloud computing manager may start and stop the stateless cloud computing process, and may recover the state and resume executing the application.

TL;DR: With this application, it is shown that symbolic model checking tools like HyTech, originally designed for the verification of hybrid systems, can be applied successfully to new classes of infinite-state systems of practical interest.
Abstract: We propose a new method for the parameterized verification of formal specifications of cache coherence protocols. The goal of parameterized verification is to establish system properties for an arbitrary number of caches. In order to achieve this purpose we define abstractions that allow us to reduce the original parameterized verification problem to a control state reachability problem for a system with integer data variables. Specifically, the methodology we propose consists of the following steps. We first define an abstraction in which we only keep track of the number of caches in a given state during the execution of a protocol. Then, we use linear arithmetic constraints to symbolically represent infinite sets of global states of the resulting abstract protocol. For reasons of efficiency, we relax the constraint operations by interpreting constraints over real numbers. Finally, we check parameterized safety properties of abstract protocols using symbolic backward reachability, a strategy that allows us to obtain sufficient conditions for termination for an interesting class of protocols. The latter problem can be solved by using the infinite-state model checker HyTech: Henzinger, Ho, and Wong-Toi, “A model checker for hybrid systems,” Proc. of the 9th International Conference on Computer Aided Verification (CAV'97), Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Springer, Haifa, Israel, 1997, Vol. 1254, pp. 460–463. HyTech handles linear arithmetic constraints using the polyhedra library of Halbwachs and Proy, “Verification of real-time systems using linear relation analysis,” Formal Methods in System Design, Vol. 11, No. 2, pp. 157–185, 1997. By using this methodology, we have automatically validated parameterized versions of widely implemented write-invalidate and write-update cache coherence protocols like Synapse, MESI, MOESI, Berkeley, Illinois, Firefly and Dragon (Handy, The Cache Memory Book, Academic Press, 1993). With this application, we have shown that symbolic model checking tools like HyTech, originally designed for the verification of hybrid systems, can be applied successfully to new classes of infinite-state systems of practical interest.

TL;DR: A menu-driven system for developing Man-Machine Interfaces (MMI) for use in the graphical monitoring of ladder logic programs executing in programmable logic controllers PLCs is described in this article.
Abstract: A menu-driven system for developing Man-Machine Interfaces (MMI) for use in the graphical monitoring of ladder logic programs executing in programmable logic controllers PLCs. The Man-Machine Interfaces graphically depict plant processes controlled by the PLC. Data from the PLC representing plant process events (flows, state changes, tank levels, etc.) are communicated to the Man-Machine Interfaces. A Development System provides a programmer's "tool box" for constructing the Man-Machine Interfaces. Ladder logic programs and databases associated therewith are imported and accessed by the Development System for use in the development of the Man-Machine Interfaces. A Runtime System provides an execution environment for the Man-Machine Interfaces. The Runtime System has the ability to access ladder logic programs during monitoring operations. A user can "hot-key" to the ladder logic program for trouble-shooting purposes.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify one or more first storage devices in a first tier of the tiered storage system that may be placed in a minimal power consumption state and identify the data segments stored on the first storage device that are most likely to be accessed during a period of time in which the first device is in the minimal consumption state.
Abstract: Mechanisms identify one or more first storage devices in a first tier of the tiered storage system that may be placed in a minimal power consumption state and identify one or more data segments stored on the one or more first storage devices that are most likely to be accessed during a period of time in which the one or more first storage devices are in the minimal power consumption state. The mechanisms migrate the one or more data segments to one or more second storage devices in one of the first tier or a second tier of the storage system and place the one or more first storage devices in the minimal power consumption state. Access requests to the one or more data segments are serviced by the one or more second storage devices while the one or more first storage devices are in the minimal power consumption state.

TL;DR: The logic as CSL is introduced which provides a powerful means to characterize execution paths of Markov chains with actions and state labels and it is shown that even the state-based fragment of asCSL is strictly more expressive than CSL if time intervals starting at zero are employed.
Abstract: In the past, logics of several kinds have been proposed for reasoning about discrete-time or continuous-time Markov chains. Most of these logics rely on either state labels (atomic propositions) or on transition labels (actions). However, in several applications it is useful to reason about both state properties and action sequences. For this purpose, we introduce the logic as CSL which provides a powerful means to characterize execution paths of Markov chains with actions and state labels. asCSL can be regarded as an extension of the purely state-based logic CSL (continuous stochastic logic). In asCSL, path properties are characterized by regular expressions over actions and state formulas. Thus, the truth value of path formulas depends not only on the available actions in a given time interval, but also on the validity of certain state formulas in intermediate states. We compare the expressive power of CSL and asCSL and show that even the state-based fragment of asCSL is strictly more expressive than CSL if time intervals starting at zero are employed. Using an automaton-based technique, an asCSL formula and a Markov chain with actions and state labels are combined into a product Markov chain. For time intervals starting at zero, we establish a reduction of the model checking problem for asCSL to CSL model checking on this product Markov chain. The usefulness of our approach is illustrated with an elaborate model of a scalable cellular communication system, for which several properties are formalized by means of asCSL formulas and checked using the new procedure
