TL;DR: In this paper, a control strategy for optimal use of the battery energy storage system (BESS) with a large wind farm can smooth out the intermittent power from the wind farm.
Abstract: Integrating a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a large wind farm can smooth out the intermittent power from the wind farm. This paper focuses on development of a control strategy for optimal use of the BESS for this purpose. The paper considers a conventional feedback-based control scheme with revisions to incorporate the operating constraints of the BESS, such as state of charge limits, charge/discharge rate, and lifetime. The goal of the control is to have the BESS provide as much smoothing as possible so that the wind farm can be dispatched on an hourly basis based on the forecasted wind conditions. The effectiveness of this control strategy has been tested by using an actual wind farm data. Finally, it is shown that the control strategy is very important in determining the proper BESS size needed for this application.

TL;DR: A clocked switched-capacitor circuit can exchange charge between adjacent batteries in a series string, without regard to component values, battery technology, or state of charge as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A clocked switched-capacitor circuit can exchange charge between adjacent batteries in a series string. This exchange drives all batteries to identical voltages, without regard to component values, battery technology, or state of charge. This equalization process can proceed while the batteries are in use or under charge, or separately. Transformer-based and transformerless implementations are given, and results of experimental tests are provided. The process is much faster and less stressful than the conventional approach, and is simpler than some active approaches.

TL;DR: In this article, an adaptive unscented Kalman filtering method was proposed to estimate the state of charge of a lithium-ion battery for battery electric vehicles, where the adaptive adjustment of the noise covariances in the state-of-charge estimation process was implemented by an idea of covariance matching.

TL;DR: An overview of new and current developments in state of charge (SOC) estimating methods for battery is given where the focus lies upon mathematical principles and practical implementations.
Abstract: An overview of new and current developments in state of charge (SOC) estimating methods for battery is given where the focus lies upon mathematical principles and practical implementations. As the battery SOC is an important parameter, which reflects the battery performance, so accurate estimation of SOC cannot only protect battery, prevent overcharge or discharge, and improve the battery life, but also let the application make rationally control strategies to achieve the purpose of saving energy. This paper gives a literature survey on the categories and mathematical methods of SOC estimation. Based on the assessment of SOC estimation methods, the future development direction of SOC estimation is proposed.

TL;DR: In this paper, an expert system manages a power grid wherein charging stations are connected to the power grid, with electric vehicles connected to charging stations, whereby the expert system selectively backfills power from connected electric vehicles to the grid through a grid tie inverter (if present) within the charging stations.
Abstract: An expert system manages a power grid wherein charging stations are connected to the power grid, with electric vehicles connected to the charging stations, whereby the expert system selectively backfills power from connected electric vehicles to the power grid through a grid tie inverter (if present) within the charging stations. In more traditional usage, the expert system allows for electric vehicle charging, coupled with user preferences as to charge time, charge cost, and charging station capabilities, without exceeding the power grid capacity at any point. A robust yet accurate state of charge (SOC) calculation method is also presented, whereby initially an open circuit voltage (OCV) based on sampled battery voltages and currents is calculated, and then the SOC is obtained based on a mapping between a previously measured reference OCV (ROCV) and SOC. The OCV-SOC calculation method accommodates likely any battery type with any current profile.
