Abstract: Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a group of mobile nodes which communicates with each other without any supporting infrastructure. Routing in MANET is extremely challenging because of MANETs dynamic features, its limited bandwidth and power energy. Nature-inspired algorithms (swarm intelligence) such as ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithms have shown to be a good technique for developing routing algorithms for MANETs. Swarm intelligence is a computational intelligence technique that involves collective behavior of autonomous agents that locally interact with each other in a distributed environment to solve a given problem in the hope of finding a global solution to the problem. In this paper, we propose a hybrid routing algorithm for MANETs based on ACO and zone routing framework of bordercasting. The algorithm, HOPNET, based on ants hopping from one zone to the next, consists of the local proactive route discovery within a node's neighborhood and reactive communication between the neighborhoods. The algorithm has features extracted from ZRP and DSR protocols and is simulated on GlomoSim and is compared to AODV routing protocol. The algorithm is also compared to the well known hybrid routing algorithm, AntHocNet, which is not based on zone routing framework. Results indicate that HOPNET is highly scalable for large networks compared to AntHocNet. The results also indicate that the selection of the zone radius has considerable impact on the delivery packet ratio and HOPNET performs significantly better than AntHocNet for high and low mobility. The algorithm has been compared to random way point model and random drunken model and the results show the efficiency and inefficiency of bordercasting. Finally, HOPNET is compared to ZRP and the strength of nature-inspired algorithm is shown.

Abstract: An algorithm for constructing and adaptively maintaining routing tables in communication networks is presented. The algorithm can be employed in message as well as circuit switching networks, uses distributed computation, provides routing tables that are loop-free for each destination at all times, adapts to changes in network flows, and is completely failsafe. The latter means that after arbitrary failures and additions, the network recovers in finite time in the sense of providing routing paths between all physically connected nodes. For each destination, the routes are independently updated by an update cycle triggered by the destination.

Abstract: We numerically investigate jamming transitions in complex heterogeneous networks. Inspired by Internet routing protocols, we study a general model that incorporates local traffic information through a tunable parameter. The results show that whether the transition from a low-traffic regime to a congested phase is of first- or second-order type is determined by the protocol at work. The microscopic dynamics reveals that these two radically different behaviors are due to the way in which traffic jams propagate through the network. Our results are discussed in the context of Internet dynamics and other transport processes that take place on complex networks and provide insights for the design of routing policies based on traffic awareness in communication systems.

Abstract: Efficient and deadlock-free routing is critical to the performance of networks-on-chip. The effectiveness of any adaptive routing algorithm strongly depends on the underlying selection strategy. A selection function is used to select the output channel where the packet will be forwarded on. In this paper we present a novel selection strategy that can be coupled with any adaptive routing algorithm. The proposed selection strategy is based on the concept of Neighbors-on-Path the aims of which is to exploit the situations of indecision occurring when the routing function returns several admissible output channels. The overall objective is to choose the channel that will allow the packet to be routed to its destination along a path that is as free as possible of congested nodes. Performance evaluation is carried out by using a flit-accurate simulator under traffic scenarios generated by both synthetic and real applications. Results obtained show how the proposed selection strategy applied to the Odd-Even routing algorithm yields an improvement in both average delay and saturation point up to 20% and 30% on average respectively, with a minimal overhead in terms of area occupation. In addition, a positive effect on total energy consumption is also observed under near-congestion packet injection rates.
