TL;DR: A matrix representation is used to capture both the sequence of and the technical relationships among the many design tasks to be performed, which define the “technical structure” of a project, which is then analyzed in order to find alternative sequences and/or definitions of the tasks.
Abstract: This research is aimed at structuring complex design projects in order to develop better products more quickly. We use a matrix representation to capture both the sequence of and the technical relationships among the many design tasks to be performed. These relationships define the “technical structure” of a project, which is then analyzed in order to find alternative sequences and/or definitions of the tasks. Such improved design procedures offer opportunities to speed development progress by streamlining the inter-task coordination. After using this technique to model design processes in several organizations, we have developed a design management strategy which focuses attention on the essential information transfer requirements of a technical project.

TL;DR: This article argues for design research as form of educational research because (a) design offers opportunities to learn unique lessons, (b) design research yields practical lessons that can be directly applied, and (c) designResearch engages researchers in the direct improvement of educational practice.
Abstract: Educational researchers are increasingly using design as a means of advancing their understanding Historically design in educational research has served as a way to implement theories for testing The emerging design research paradigm treats design as a strategy for developing and refining theories In this article, I discuss the lessons that can be learned from design Starting from a model that characterizes designs in terms of problem analyses, design solutions, and design processes, I describe 3 types of theories that can be developed through design research: domain theories, design frameworks, and design methodologies I present examples from a design research program investigating software supports for reflective inquiry I argue for design research as form of educational research because (a) design offers opportunities to learn unique lessons, (b) design research yields practical lessons that can be directly applied, and (c) design research engages researchers in the direct improvement of educatio

TL;DR: This work defines system platforms and argues about their use and relevance, and presents a new approach to platform-based design called modern embedded systems, compilers, architectures and languages, based on highly concurrent and software programmable architectures and associated design tools.
Abstract: System-level design issues become critical as implementation technology evolves toward increasingly complex integrated circuits and the time-to-market pressure continues relentlessly. To cope with these issues, new methodologies that emphasize re-use at all levels of abstraction are a "must", and this is a major focus of our work in the Gigascale Silicon Research Center. We present some important concepts for system design that are likely to provide at least some of the gains in productivity postulated above. In particular, we focus on a method that separates parts of the design process and makes them nearly independent so that complexity could be mastered. In this domain, architecture-function co-design and communication-based design are introduced and motivated. Platforms are essential elements of this design paradigm. We define system platforms and we argue about their use and relevance. Then we present an application of the design methodology to the design of wireless systems. Finally, we present a new approach to platform-based design called modern embedded systems, compilers, architectures and languages, based on highly concurrent and software programmable architectures and associated design tools.

TL;DR: It is argued that certain theoretical concepts such as mobility barriers, isolating mechanisms and controllable variables provide much firmer bases for identifying strategic groups within industries and taxonomies for understanding the nature of strategic group formulation can be developed.
Abstract: This paper discusses the concept of strategic groups, focusing upon the importance of intra-industry strategic groupings in understanding differences across firms within an industry. The problems involved in identifying strategic groups within industries are examined through a comprehensive review of recent studies. It is demonstrated that much of the research has used surrogates for elements of a firm's strategic direction, e.g. vertical integration, product range, R & D expenditure, to suggest bases by which creative and sustainable groups are formed. The authors argue that certain theoretical concepts such as mobility barriers, isolating mechanisms and controllable variablesprovide much firmer bases for identifying strategic groups within industries. Thus, taxonomies for understanding the nature of strategic group formulation can be developed. Implications of the strategic group concept for such strategic issues as the structure-performance linkage, firm mobility, patterns of rivalry, industry evolutionand firm growthare then examined. The paper concludes by indicating fruitful directions for strategic group research in the context of the strategic management field.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduce the concept of "strategic design for sustainability", which is the design of an innovation strategy, shifting the business focus from designing physical products only, to designing a system of products and services which are jointly capable of fulfilling specific client demands, while re-orienting current unsustainable trends in production and consumption practices.
