TL;DR: In this paper, a lighting pattern control system and remote control equipment of a street light are provided to enhance energy efficiency by separately controlling a main street light and a second street light.
Abstract: PURPOSE: A lighting pattern control system and remote control equipment of a street light are provided to enhance energy efficiency by separately controlling a main street light and a second street light. CONSTITUTION: A lighting pattern is set in main street lights(M1,M2,M3). The main street light transmits and receives a lighting control signal through local area wireless communications. Secondary street lights(N1-N7) are turned on by receiving the lighting control signal. The secondary street light transmits and receives the lighting control signal with a neighboring street light. A power supply supplies a driving power source. A GPS(Global Positioning System) receives a satellite signal from a satellite and creates and outputs time and location information. A moving object sensing sensor senses a moving object and outputs a moving object sensing signal.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of light pollution problems in metropolitan areas are investigated in Hong Kong, and the relationship between light pollution and several social-economic factors such as land use, household income, and types of outdoor lighting in the scale areas given, are examined.
Abstract: . The effects of light pollution problems in metropolitan areas are investigated in this study. Areas of Hong Kong are used as the source of three typical study cases. One case represents the regional scale, a second represents the district scale, and a third represents the street scale. Two light pollution parameters, Night Sky Brightness (NSB) and Street Light Level (SLL), are the focus of the analyses. Light pollution visualization approaches in relation to the different scales include various light pollution maps. They provide straightforward presentations of the light pollution situations in the study areas. The relationship between light pollution and several social-economic factors such as land use, household income, and types of outdoor lighting in the scale areas given, are examined. Results show that: (1) Land use may be one factor affecting light pollution in the regional scale; (2) A relatively strong correlation exists between light pollution and household income in the district scale; (3) The heaviest light pollution in the street scale is created by spotlights and also the different types of lighting from shops. The impact of the latter is in relation to the shop profile and size.

TL;DR: In this article, the environmental impacts of a solar and eolic street light called SOLEOL are quantified using a simplified Life Cycle Assessment (i.e. using simplified inputs for the photovoltaic system and the generator).
Abstract: The idea of a street light which would be independent of the power grid and which would be in the same time ‘ecological’ is to be demonstrated. To answer this question, the environmental impacts of a Solar and Eolic street light called SOLEOL are quantified using a simplified Life Cycle Assessment (i.e. using simplified inputs for the photovoltaic system and the generator). The chosen Functional Unit is: ‘the lighting during 25 years with LED lamps with a power of about 2500 lumens’. The data corresponding to the Life Cycle Inventory are divided into the classical four phases of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. The environmental impacts are valuated and aggregated; then a comparison is made with a conventional street light. It is shown that the SOLEOL and the conventional street lights are generally at the same level, except for the non-renewable energy consumption where the SOLEOL is better for the environment, and for aquatic toxicity where the SOLEOL street light has a greater impact. This study shows that a street light said to be environmentally friendly could have in fact a greater impact on the environment, but in our case, and even if no optimization has been made on it, the SOLEOL street light is honorably placed relatively to conventional street lights.

TL;DR: In this paper, the acceptability of LED luminaires for use on major roadways through a feasibility analysis using data collected at various LED street light testing sites was investigated, and nine distinct LED luminaries were analyzed in field testing.
Abstract: LED technology has advanced towards use in high intensity lighting purposes. LED luminaires have a significantly longer expected lifetime than traditional highintensity discharge lighting systems. Due to these recent improvements in LED technology, there is a growing need for a comprehensive method to analyze the applicability of LED luminaires for use on major routes and roadways. This research investigates the acceptability of LED luminaires for use on major roadways through a feasibility analysis using data collected at various LED street light testing sites. Nine distinct LED luminaires were analyzed in field testing. The field data was then analyzed and compared to manufacturer’s claims, or values produced by the manufacturer’s IES file. Sustainability was incorporated through an economic analysis, environmental impact analysis, and a stakeholder analysis. Each of the nine luminaires in the field feasibility study were also economically analyzed. An economic life cycle approach was used to analyze the economic requirements for each luminaire. The life cycle approach includes cradle to grave costs, including installation costs, operation and maintenance costs, and removal and disposal costs. A sensitivity analysis was also performed to identify the most critical variables within the life cycle analysis. The increased electrical efficiency provided by LED luminaires causes a decreased environmental impact through reductions in CO2 production and reduced water consumption. Social sustainability was analyzed through the discussions and interviews with the penultimate end users, state and local agencies. Plans for testing products for future implementation are also discussed.
