TL;DR: The smart embedded system which controls the street lights based on detection of vehicles or any other obstacles on the street will get automatically ON/OFF according to the obstacle detection and the same information can be accessed through the internet.
Abstract: This project aims for designing and executing the advanced development in embedded systems for energy saving of street lights. Currently, we have a manual system where the street lights will be switched ON in the evening before the sunsets and they are switched OFF in the next day morning after there is sufficient light on the outside[1]. But the actual timing for these lights to be switched ON is when there is absolute darkness. With this, the power will be wasted up to some extent. This project gives solution for electrical power wastage [2]. Also, the manual operation of the lighting system is completely eliminated. The proposed system provides a solution for energy saving. This is achieved by sensing and approaching a vehicle using an IR transmitter and IR Receiver couple. Upon sensing the movement the sensor transmits the data to the microcontroller which furthermore the Light to switch ON [4]. Similarly, as soon as the vehicle or an obstacle goes away the Light gets switched OFF as the sensor senses an object at the same time the status(ON/OFF) of the street light can be accessed from anywhere and anytime through the internet. This project is implemented with the smart embedded system which controls the street lights based on detection of vehicles or any other obstacles on the street.W he never the obstacle is detected on the street within the specified time the light will get automatically ON/OFF according to the obstacle detection and the same information can be accessed through the internet. The real-time information of the street light(ON/OFF Status) can be accessed from any time, anywhere through internet.

TL;DR: The proposed approach uses an energy effective approach that controls the street lights by automatically switching them when there are people or vehicles around the post when it is dark, which overcomes the disadvantages of the conventional Street Lighting System.
Abstract: In day to day life electricity has been an area of concern worldwide. There are not much sources for non-renewable sources and most of the power generation stations, they are based on fuels that are conventional. In order make ourselves independent of these sources of energy, it is recommended that we proceed on to the new and renewable power sources like solar and wind. We can also make effective utilization of the conventional and non-renewable sources for a proper usage of electricity, so that we do not run into shortage of power. Street lights are one of the consumable sources of electricity that are essential parts of the day to day life. The conventional street lighting systems require manual operation and also consume a large amount of power as they are in powered on condition from evening to early morning. The conventional manual operated street lighting systems consume a large amount of power, need manual operators and heavy cost on installation which has been a great disadvantage and an area of major concern. The costs of energy can be reduced immediately to 35% through intelligent on/off mechanism and targeted progressive dimming and organized way of power consumption. We can reduce the overall consumption costs up to 42% by proper maintenance. The proposed approach uses an energy effective approach that controls the street lights by automatically switching them when there are people or vehicles around the post when it is dark. The smart street lighting system is so flexible and it consists of various sensors and a controller which make it as an intelligent street lighting system. Thus it overcomes the disadvantages of the conventional Street Lighting System.

TL;DR: The focus of this project is to design a system of street lights controller to provide a reduction in power consumption by using Light Dependent Resistor, Infrared sensor, battery, battery and LED.
Abstract: Smart street light is an intelligent control of street lights to optimize the problem of power consumption of the street, late in night. Currently, usual street lights are automatically turn on when it becomes dark and turn off when it becomes bright. This is huge waste of energy in the entire world as it is an essential community service, but current implementation is not efficient. Conventional street lights are being replaced by Light Emitting Diode (LED) street lighting system, which reduces the power consumption. The focus of this project is to design a system of street lights controller to provide a reduction in power consumption. The prototype is design by using Light Dependent Resistor (LDR), Infrared sensor (IR), battery and LED. All this component was controlled by Arduino UNO as the microcontroller. The brightness of the lamps is being controlled in this project to reduce the power consumption. The dimming of the lamps depends on the speed of object motion detected such as pedestrians, cyclists and cars. The higher speed of moving object, the greater the level of intensity. For this idea, the innovation of street lights is not quite the same as conventional street lights that are controlled by timer switch or light sensor which automatically turns the street lights on during sunset and off during sunrise. According to the study, motion detection devices may help to save up to 40% of energy per month.

TL;DR: The proposed system will overcome all the drawbacks of conventional system and provide energy saving, smart alerting solutions and energy efficiency.
Abstract: In an era of smart living, people strive to innovate existing technologies to achieve the concept of smart city. Street lighting systems is one of them. Most urban, towns and semiurban cities still use conventional lighting systems. Current lighting systems use compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) with combination of high pressure sodium lamps to provide illumination. But the conventional use leads to huge demand and wastage of electricity between 20 to 40% of the total energy produced. Although a single unit of lighting consumes less power, their enormous quantity and long hours of operation requires more energy. So, energy saving is an essential need for smart lighting systems. Energy efficiency is achieved by this smart lighting system. It will provide light that varies intensity as per illumination requirement. There are water level sensors that will alert and send data of the increasing water levels in an area to authorities which can prove lifesaving during rains. There are emergency lights that would light up to warn of dangers or emergencies along the road. The LCD screens can be used to display statistics of available information. It will display weather forecast and emergency notifications. The smart street light that is deployed on a pole, also has provision to send alert for broken lights that requires maintenance. So, the proposed system will overcome all the drawbacks of conventional system and provide energy saving, smart alerting solutions.

TL;DR: This paper is mainly focusing on building such smart cities with high quality identification and adaptation technique of light intensity of the streets with water logging area controlling and monitoring through IOT.
Abstract: In modern world, one of the key agenda of the government is to build up the smart city for easy accessibility of all the facilities. IOT can be the significant option to build up such smart cities throughout the country. This paper is mainly focusing on building such smart cities with high quality identification and adaptation technique of light intensity of the streets with water logging area controlling and monitoring through IOT. This system is controlled by an embedded body configured with ESP12, Node Red, three stage water height detection sensor and LDR module. Through the LDR light sensor the signal gets processed by the Node-Mcu and is sent to the local control room via Internet. Solar panel has been used here as a power source to charge the lithium battery of the device. When the visibility range of light of any street is not up to the mark of human eye visibility range then the data will be sent from local control room to the head control room along with the area location where the street light visibility is not suitable for human eye. In this way the head control room will get a real time system to monitor information of the lightning conditions in a single dashboard display. After analyzing the data the following conclusions can be derived that, it might have been possible that some lights have been damaged or had been stolen. Therefore the visibility range is not up to the mark. More light have to be deployed for proper visibility of that street. Similarly in rainy season the system will operate with the water level sensor to indicate which area of the city is water logged due to heavy rain. The whole system will be deployed in street light posts preferably for easy identification of those areas visibility range and water logging condition monitoring purpose. The system has been planned to develop a smart city for smooth functioning of the human daily life with preventing wastage of energy.

TL;DR: The prototype hardware for automatic street light system is being proposed, which will use an Arduino Uno microcontroller and estimates the saving of energy in nighttime and the amount of light utilization in a street and city in India.
Abstract: The considerable amount of electrical power is consumed in lighting up the streets in India. However, streets remain deserted for most of the time after night fall, and a minimum frequency of vehicles pass through the street in that duration of time. The conventional lighting system on road and highways is not automatic in India. The volume of traffic and passerby is very through the streets in nighttime, and light is on for the whole night. The larger amount of light is wasted on roads meaninglessly. The same issue can be addressed with the use of automatic or flexible-lighting system technology and LED lamps which can be as solution for power saving, fast, reliable, and efficient in operation to control the amount of light utilization in a street and city. In the paper, the prototype hardware for automatic street light system is being proposed, which will use an Arduino Uno microcontroller and estimates the saving of energy in nighttime.

TL;DR: This paper develops a novel cost-effective system LiSense to monitor illumination levels of street lights and detect as well as localize malfunctioning light posts and uses crowdsourcing, the first of its kind approach to monitoring street light condition.
Abstract: Adequate illumination of city streets during night hours is essential to ensure road safety. However, even for developed cities, monitoring streetlights still remain a tedious task that relies on manual inspection reports. Existing systems mostly rely on vehicle-mounted camera or sensors fitted at every light post that is not cost-effective and scalable. In contrary, in this paper, we develop a novel cost-effective system LiSense to monitor illumination levels of street lights and detect as well as localize malfunctioning light posts. The system utilizes ambient light and GPS sensors and uses crowdsourcing. Sensor trails collected by our App from 2-wheeler covering 160 km suburban city road detects all malfunctioning street lights more than 96% in accuracy with a mean localization error of 6 meters. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first of its kind approach to monitoring street light condition which is cost-effective, scalable and suitable for developing regions.

TL;DR: The algorithm discussed in this paper, takes advantage of Cellular Automata, to simulate the traffic similar to real-time traffic and utilized Bernoulli’s probability distribution to analyze the randomized the traffic present on the roads, and nearly 50 percent of the energy consumed by the existing smart street lighting systems can be saved.
Abstract: Street Lights are absolutely important and without them, people would be risking their life every minute they spend on the roads. The main problem involved in street light hardware system is excessive consumption of power. This amount of power consumption can be minimized by designing smart street lighting systems in order to have smart cities. To enable the growth of smart cities and help them shape into self-sustaining, energy harvesting, green hubs, the energy must be conserved. To solve this problem there are many smart street lighting methods which discussed efficient ways to conserve power. To support the financial needs of some of the proposed methods, a struggling economy like India would not be able to afford the costs. However, to make it truly smart and affordable, the number of sensors involved in the street lighting system can be reduced strategically to account for driver’s visibility range as well as power consumed by the lights. The algorithm discussed in this paper, takes advantage of Cellular Automata [CA], to simulate the traffic similar to real-time traffic and utilized Bernoulli’s probability distribution to analyze the randomized the traffic present on the roads. This helped to visualize the situation as aptly as possible. According to the statistics street lights use up nearly 38% of the electricity produced. If this energy is saved using an energy saving scheme such as the one discussed in this paper, that energy can be utilized elsewhere – where there is an absolute and immediate need, for instance smart cities. According to the results obtained through the utilization of the method discussed in this paper, nearly 50 percent of the energy consumed by the existing smart street lighting systems can be saved. If the energy thus saved is transferred to the development of the smart cities, more than 100 of them can achieve full transition from an urban city into a smart city.

Abstract: In the present day scenario a significant portion of electricity produced is consumed by street lights. With the increasing demand for non-conventional energy resources, the conservation of energy is an important domain in current research. The various existing street light systems all around the world use old technology, therefore are not optimized, inefficient and hence consume more power. On account of this, we often find street lights switched ON even when there is no vehicular or pedestrian movement on the roads. Due to the advancement in technology, automated systems are being preferred over manual systems. Considering this, our automated system refers to Smart Street Lighting System that adapts to movement by pedestrians, cyclists and cars. This in turn would save a large amount of electricity that could be used for other constructive work.

TL;DR: The smart street light control system adopts a dynamic control methodology and would help in reducing the overall consumption of street light energy and support to energy-saving aspects of the nations.
Abstract: Objective: The main purpose of this paper is to design and execute the system to control the intensity of the street light without any manual operation. Methods: The system is based on the principle of light and motion sensing. The system is made efficient enough by replacing the HID lamps with the LEDs. In general, street lights on the highways are designed with high-intensity lamps that consume more energy and also cannot be changed as per the requirement. Thus, the proposed system overcomes these problems using LEDs instead of HID lamps in the street light systems. It is the Dual Power Saver setup since it saves power with the help of solar energy which charges the battery of the circuit using the solar panel and second by just increasing the intensity of the LED in the presence of a pedestrian or a vehicle using the suitable combination of microcontroller and IR sensors. The Microcontroller AT89c51 is used for control mechanism of the system. Results and Conclusion: The smart street light control system adopts a dynamic control methodology. According to the proposed plan, initially, when it becomes dark, all the street lights automatically glows with low intensity. However, throughout the night streetlights remain switched on for security concerns on low intensity. When a vehicle passes by, a block of street lights glows, and as the vehicle moves forward, the next block of lights starts glowing where the previous block switches back to low intensity. Whereas, lights will be kept OFF when there is sufficient amount of natural light is available. The proposed work would help in reducing the overall consumption of street light energy and support to energy-saving aspects of the nations.

TL;DR: In this design a new technique is suggested to automate the entire street lighting system, where when there is no necessity of light the system will go into a power down mode and the lamp won’t glow.
Abstract: Our domain name is street light. It is sure that we can’t leave in a society without power. So we need to maximize the usage of renewable energy so that we can preserve conventional resources. Normal solar PV based street lighting system lacks automation. The problem is that it will be on state even though there is no need of light and hence it causes loss of power. Yet another problem is that in these system which is not automated, when any fault occurs we may not be able to know about the problem and hence the problem remains won’t be rectified. In this design a new technique is suggested to automate the entire system. Here when there is no necessity of light the system will go into a power down mode and the lamp won’t glow. Presence sensor is used to detect the presence of humans or cars then it gets turned on automatically. So in the absence of the object, the light won’t be on. So that’s energy be saved. And we can use maximum use of solar energy in street light and can reduce unnecessary use.
