Abstract: This paper presents the result of a study of the quality of Urban lighting. The purpose of installing the Street light is to light up all streets/roads in Warri at night. But due to some factors such as poles being brought down by accident or technical problem as a result of some bulbs that went bad without being replaced, the desired even lighting of the streets/roads was not always guaranteed. This uneven lighting which results is a hazard to road users. We modeled the evenness of light on the roads and in the process captured the uneven lighting that a road user passing the roads will experience. The results of the model and the actual measurement of the Street light that was taken for some time, showed that parts of the roads experienced full, partial, one and three quarter lightings, while some other parts were thrown in complete darkness. The implication is that users travelling along the road experienced wide variation of light that could lead to accidents. For about two and half years after the study was conducted, the authors periodically monitored the conditions of the street lights to establish the extent of their sustainability. It was noticed that all the lights went off thereby returning the streets to their pre-lighting condition. The reason for the complete disruption is also reported as a learning point in project sustainability and a learning point for the future. http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v35i2.23

TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate a process of controlling the street lights in country like Bangladesh employing SIM900 GSM-GPRS Shield which comes up with the provision of manual control, semi-automated control as well as full-automatic control.
Abstract: Street lighting system has always been the traditional manual system of illuminating the streets in Bangladesh, where a dedicated person is posted only to control the street lights of a zone, who roams around the zonal area to switch on and switch off the lights two times a day, which brings about the exhibition of bright lights in street even after sunrise and in some cases maybe the whole day. This results in insertion to the budget. In addition to this, faulty lights may not come to the heed of the concerned authority for a long time which leads to the technical downside. This paper demonstrates a process of controlling the street lights in country like Bangladesh employing SIM900 GSM-GPRS Shield which comes up with the provision of manual control, semi-automated control as well as full-automated control.

TL;DR: This article helps the research community in designing better architecture of street light which helps in reducing the manpower, eliminating the errors which occur due to manual operation and saving in energy consumption ofStreet light.
Abstract: Automation of street light and the energy losses occurring in them is an important issue because it requires a large manpower and also leads to increased energy expenses for a city due to which system becomes less efficient. This research paper deals with survey and analysis of system architecture of street light and scope of automation in street light. Automated systems can be employed to make the street lighting system very efficient. This article helps the research community in designing better architecture of street light which helps in reducing the manpower, eliminating the errors which occur due to manual operation and saving in energy consumption of street light.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a hybrid type smart street light using renewable energy, which includes a street light sensing flow of vehicles in real time and inducing deceleration of the vehicles by flashing light, and a wind power generation unit installed on the top of the street light and supplying electricity, produced by using wind, to the street lights.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a hybrid type smart street light using renewable energy. The hybrid type smart street light implemented to drive a warning light using electricity produced by using light of the sun and wind power, which are renewable energy recycling existing fossil fuel or converting and using renewable energy comprises: a street light sensing flow of vehicles in real time and inducing deceleration of the vehicles by flashing light; a wind power generation unit installed on the top of the street light and supplying electricity, produced by using wind, to the street light; and a solar power generation unit installed on an upper surface of the wind power generation unit and supplying the electricity, produced by using the light of the sun, to the street light.
