TL;DR: In this paper, the authors exploit long-term monitoring data of structural strain for analytical modeling of multimodal rainflow-counted stress spectra by use of the method of finite mixture distributions in conjunction with a hybrid mixture parameter estimation algorithm.
Abstract: This study focuses on how to exploit long-term monitoring data of structural strain for analytical modeling of multimodal rainflow-counted stress spectra by use of the method of finite mixture distributions in conjunction with a hybrid mixture parameter estimation algorithm. The long-term strain data acquired from an instrumented bridge carrying both highway and railway traffic is used to verify the procedure. A wavelet-based filtering technique is first applied to eliminate the temperature effect inherent in the measured strain data. The stress spectrum is obtained by extracting the stress range and mean stress from the stress time histories with the aid of a rainflow counting algorithm. By synthesizing the features captured from daily stress spectra, a representative sample of stress spectrum accounting for multiple loading effects is derived. Then, the modeling of the multimodal stress range is performed by use of finite mixed normal, lognormal, and Weibull distributions, with the best mixed distributi...

TL;DR: Cost of FBG fabrication, high-quality FBG demodulation system, practical encapsulation (package) techniques and indirect FBG-based sensors, and practical applications are the cores for FBG to be widely popularized in infrastructures.
Abstract: In recent years, FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) has been accepted as a new kind of sensing element for structural health monitoring (SHM) in civil infrastructures. Cost of FBG fabrication, high-quality FBG demodulation system, practical encapsulation (package) techniques and indirect FBG-based sensors, and practical applications are the cores for FBG to be widely popularized in infrastructures. In this paper, firstly, the FBG fabrication and demodulation system are briefly introduced and the practical needs from infrastructure are pointed out; Secondly, the practical encapsulation (package) techniques and indirect FBG based sensors from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), have been conducted; Thirdly, some practical applications, taken as examples, are carried out; Finally, the future studies and problems are also set forth. Researches and practical applications show that FBG sensors have become one of the key sensors in SHM instead of some conventional electrical sensors.

TL;DR: The paper explores a newly proposed, very efficient numerical simulation tool for Lamb wave propagation modelling in aluminum plates exposed to temperature changes using a local interaction approach implemented with a parallel computing architecture and graphics cards.
Abstract: Temperature has a significant effect on Lamb wave propagation. It is important to compensate for this effect when the method is considered for structural damage detection. The paper explores a newly proposed, very efficient numerical simulation tool for Lamb wave propagation modelling in aluminum plates exposed to temperature changes. A local interaction approach implemented with a parallel computing architecture and graphics cards is used for these numerical simulations. The numerical results are compared with the experimental data. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach could be used efficiently to produce a large database required for the development of various temperature compensation procedures in structural health monitoring applications.
