Abstract: In this study, we investigate the interplay between context and agency for three early‐career academics as they seek to develop their teaching Our analysis is conducted in light of Archer’s realist social theory, framed by critical realism We argue that it is possible to see ways in which Archer’s account of the interplay between structure and agency is evident in the practice of these academics, with the influence of contextual factors mediated by their concerns and reflexive deliberations We thus open up a range of questions for further research and points of departure for the development of practice Dans cet article, nous etudions l’interrelation entre le contexte et la participation de trois universitaires au debut de leur carriere, alors que ceux‐ci cherchent a ameliorer leur enseignement Notre analyse est effectuee a la lumiere de la theorie realiste sociale (realist social theory) de Archer, selon une approche realiste critique Nous defendons la these qu’il est possible de reconnaitre des fac

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report the findings of one study within a Health Education Authority funded family health research programme, which sought to elicit the views of people from different family backgrounds about notions of mental health, the ways in which the latter is maintained and views about emotional support.
Abstract: This article reports the findings of one study within a Health Education Authority funded family health research programme. The study sought to elicit the views of people from different family backgrounds about notions of mental health, the ways in which the latter is maintained and views about emotional support. The article outlines some findings from this study. An apparent disjuncture is outlined between a lay preference for attributing the determinants of mental health to socio-structural factors on the one hand and, on the other, a focus on personal agency as the primary tenable means of dealing with threats to psychological wellbeing. It is argued that this co-existence of attributions about structure and agency, which also reflect the constraints surrounding professional interventions, could provide the basis of a partnership between professionals and lay people in mental health promotion and service delivery. The social policy implications of lay views are discussed in conclusion.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report a case study of aspects of the construction of masculine subjectivities in a Catholic boys' school, and of the encounter of women teachers with its organizational culture.
Abstract: In this paper I attempt to fill partially a gap identified by Mills (1988) who claims that, despite the emergence of a strong body of literature on organizational culture, gender has remained 'at best' a marginal theme in this literature. Draw ing upon notions of agency and structure, I report a case study of aspects of the construction of masculine subjectivities in a Catholic boys' school, and of the encounter of women teachers with its organizational culture. Such a focus is particularly revealing of the institution's gender regime. I examine gender as an aspect of background rules and hegemonic culture as they are mediated within the institutional context of the school. Finally, I consider the responses of the women to their encounter with the institution in terms of feminist possibilities for organizational reform.

TL;DR: In this paper, the sources of power in higher education are described and put into the context of values, ideologies, and policies governing higher education of today, with the hope that readers will be inspired to problematise their own academic development practices and to reclaim a phase in the history of the profession where members displayed more of a political awareness.
Abstract: This text taps into an ongoing discussion about academic development. It challenges an image of academic development as precarious and liminal and explores academic development as powerful. Sources of power are described and put into the context of values, ideologies, and policies governing higher education of today. It is our hope that readers will be inspired to problematise their own academic development practices and to reclaim a phase in the history of the profession where members displayed more of a political awareness.

TL;DR: A multi-level model of the interaction of structure and agency in health promotion is proposed, connected to central claims of the Ottawa Charter, i.e. "build healthy public policy", "create supportive environments", "strengthen community actions", and "develop personal skills".
