TL;DR: The alkaloid mixtures present in the fruit pericarp and fruit pulp of Strychnos nux-vomica L. are qualitatively very similar to that found in the seeds.

TL;DR: A sensitive method for the identification and quantitation of the toxic alkaloids strychnine and brucine from postmortem specimens has been established and was applied for the analysis of blood and gastric contents of a 34-year-old female who died after ingestion of a packet of herbal medicine powder containing the seeds of Strychnos nux-vomica L.
Abstract: A sensitive method for the identification and quantitation of the toxic alkaloids strychnine and brucine from postmortem specimens has been established. After solid-phase extraction using Oasis | MCX cartridges the extracts were analyzed by highperformance liquid chromatography with diode.array detection. The limit of detection was 0.5 ng/mL blood for strychnine and brucine, and the limit of quantitation was 5 ng/mL blood for strychnine and brucine. The method was applied for the analysis of blood and gastric contents of a 34-year-old female who died after ingestion of a packet of herbal medicine powder containing the seeds of Strychnos nux-vomica L. Strychnine and brucine were detected in all the samples. The concentration in our case is consistent with that in previous reports.

••
TL;DR: S. nux-vomica extracts show antihyperglycemic activity in experimental animals and are evaluated for antidiabetic activity on the basis of extractive yield and phytoconstituents in alloxan-induced diabetic rats using gliclazide as standard.

TL;DR: Longer feedings have revealed that geissoschizine and the Wieland-Gumlich aldehyde are specifically incorporated into strychnine in Strychnos nux vomica; the detection of six alkaloids not previously found in this species is also described.
Abstract: In contrast to short-term experiments, prolonged feedings have revealed that geissoschizine (2) and the Wieland-Gumlich aldehyde (3) are specifically incorporated into strychnine (1) in Strychnos nux vomica; the detection of six alkaloids not previously found in this species is also described.
