TL;DR: There are substantial and significant declines in scores for all years except the final year, and more detailed analyses of the scores for subscales within the questionnaire show that the declines are greatest in the aspects apparently under teachers’ control.
Abstract: Dear Sir We wish to present, briefly, further longitudinal data which address student perceptions of the learning environment in the medical school in Newcastle, N e w South Wales, Australia. Clarke et a l . (1984) administered a survey questionnaire to students in 1979 and 1982, and this report describes the results of a survey undertaken in 1985. Briefly, the same S6-item questionnaire was administered to all 5 years of students in the undergraduate programme. The overall response rate was 7g0/0, after follow-up; response rates for individual years of students are given in Fig. I . Figure I summarizes the scores for students in each year, as recorded in 1979 (when there were only two cohorts in the school), 1982 and 1985. There are substantial and significant declines in scores for all years except the final year. More detailed analyses of the scores for subscales within the questionnaire show that the declines are greatest in the aspects apparently under teachers’ control (e.g. degree of flexibility of the programme, organizational coherence of different educational experiences) and least in such aspects as the degree of interaction between students. The results are disappointing in that years I 62

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an action research focusing on applying business intelligence (BI) in a UK higher education institution that has developed a student engagement tracking system (SES) for student engagement management.
Abstract: Advances in emerging ICT have enabled organisations to develop innovative ways to intelligently collect data that may not be possible before. However, this leads to the explosion of data and unprecedented challenges in making strategic and effective use of available data. This research-in-progress paper presents an action research focusing on applying business intelligence (BI) in a UK higher education institution that has developed a student engagement tracking system (SES) for student engagement management. The current system serves merely as a data collection and processing system, which needs significant enhancement for better decision support. This action research aims to enhance the current SETS with BI solutions and explore its strategic use. The research attempts to follow socio-technical approach in its effort to make the BI application a success. Progress and experience so far has revealed interesting findings on advancing our understanding and research in organisation-wide BI for better decision-making.

TL;DR: Adoption refers to institutions migrating from traditional modes of paper based school management and student engagement to a computerized environment to enhance academic development and flexibility, increase level of student engagement, enhance cost-effectiveness, and create a sustainable environment through interactive learning resources.
Abstract: Opportunities, benefits and achievements are emerging factors for institutions, lecturers, and learners from the increasing availability of Information Communication Technologies (ICT). These factors are relevant especially for new and growing higher educational institutions (HEI) whose survival depends on, among other factors, the use of ICT to develop new organizational models to enhance their internal and external communication relationship and produce quality graduates. Given the relevance of the topic, the researchers studied positive impact of the adoption of ICT by higher educational institutions in an attempt to justify the use of ICT. In this paper, adoption refers to institutions migrating from traditional modes of paper based school management and student engagement to a computerized environment. This shift is hoped to enhance academic development and flexibility, increase level of student engagement, enhance cost-effectiveness, and create a sustainable environment through interactive learning resources. Although the study was conducted at a single institution (i.e. Botho University), it restricts its focus exclusively to the educational motivations for institutions to adopt ICT. In order to ascertain the current state of knowledge, an extensive review, analysis, and synthesis of the collected data and literature have been undertaken. The authors conclude the paper by identifying and examining potential benefits and achievements of institutions in adopting ICT.
