TL;DR: Inferior colliculus (IC) units have a significantly lower stimulus threshold when driven with a cochlear implant using bipolar stimuli at high (2 k pulses/s) compared to low pulse rates.
Abstract: Inferior colliculus (IC) units have a significantly lower stimulus threshold when driven with a cochlear implant using bipolar stimuli at high (2 k pulses/s) compared to low (125 pulse/s) pulse rates. At high pulse rates temporal summation is used to explain this threshold shift.

TL;DR: Adverse childhood events predisposed adults to enhanced TSSP, which is potentially linked to an increased likelihood to develop chronic pain problems, and the trauma group showed a tendency of greater sensitization within TSSP trials and lack of habituation over repeatedTSSP trials.
Abstract: The Impact of Adverse Childhood Events on Temporal Summation of Second Pain. (August 2012) Dokyoung Sophia You, B.S.N., Hanyang University; B.A., Case Western Reserve University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Mary W. Meagher Adverse childhood events have been identified as a risk factor for developing chronic pain conditions in adulthood. However, previous studies have inconsistently supported the link between adverse childhood events and hypersensitivity to laboratoryinduced pain. Therefore, this study intended to investigate the effects of adverse childhood events on temporal summation of second pain (TSSP). A group of 38 healthy and pain-free college students participated in laboratory pain tests after being screened for childhood trauma history. Half of participants (47.5% female) were positive for childhood trauma and the other half (63.2% female) reported no adverse childhood event. The laboratory pain tests measured TSSP using 10 thermal pulses per trial over four consecutive trials. The trauma group showed a tendency of greater sensitization within TSSP trials and lack of habituation over repeated TSSP trials. In sum, adverse childhood events predisposed adults to enhanced TSSP, which is potentially linked to an increased likelihood to develop chronic pain problems.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present rigorous computational support for the hypothesis that the extraclassical receptive field phenomena largely result from local short-range (< 0.5 mm) cortical connections and LGN input.
Abstract: Neural mechanisms of extraclassical receptive field phenomena in V1 are commonly assumed to result from long-range lateral connections and/or extrastriate feedback. We address two such phenomena: surround suppression and contrast dependent receptive field size. We present rigorous computational support for the hypothesis that the phenomena largely result from local short-range (< 0.5 mm) cortical connections and LGN input. Surround suppression in our simulations results from (A) direct cortical inhibition or (B) suppression of recurrent cortical excitation, or (C) action of both these mechanisms simultaneously. Mechanisms B and C are substantially more prevalent than A. We observe an average growth in the range of spatial summation of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs for low contrast. However, we find this is neither sufficient nor necessary to explain contrast dependent receptive field size, which usually involves additional changes in the relative gain of these inputs.
