TL;DR: In this paper, a stack-and-draw technique was used to construct a ZBLAN photonic crystal fiber with a high air-filling fraction, a small solid core, nanoscale features and near-perfect structure.
Abstract: Silica-based photonic crystal fibre has proven highly successful for supercontinuum generation, with smooth and flat spectral power densities. However, fused silica glass suffers from strong material absorption in the mid-infrared (>2,500 nm), as well as ultraviolet-related optical damage (solarization), which limits performance and lifetime in the ultraviolet (<380 nm). Supercontinuum generation in silica photonic crystal fibre is therefore only possible between these limits. A number of alternative glasses have been used to extend the mid-infrared performance, including chalcogenides, fluorides and heavy-metal oxides, but none has extended the ultraviolet performance. Here, we describe the successful fabrication (using the stack-and-draw technique) of a ZBLAN photonic crystal fibre with a high air-filling fraction, a small solid core, nanoscale features and near-perfect structure. We also report its use in the generation of ultrabroadband, long-term stable, supercontinua spanning more than three octaves in the spectral range 200–2,500 nm. A low-loss ZBLAN micro-structured fibre is used to generate a supercontinuum spanning from the UV to the mid-IR (200 nm–2,500 nm). The material has high resistance even after extended operation and can withstand large spectral power densities.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrate stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy implemented in a laser scanning confocal microscope using excitation light derived from supercontinuum generation in a microstructured optical fiber.
Abstract: We demonstrate stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy implemented in a laser scanning confocal microscope using excitation light derived from supercontinuum generation in a microstructured optical fiber. Images with resolution improvement beyond the far-field diffraction limit in both the lateral and axial directions were acquired by scanning overlapped excitation and depletion beams in two dimensions using the flying spot scanner of a commercially available laser scanning confocal microscope. The spatial properties of the depletion beam were controlled holographically using a programmable spatial light modulator, which can rapidly change between different STED imaging modes and also compensate for aberrations in the optical path. STED fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy is demonstrated through the use of time-correlated single photon counting.

TL;DR: It is shown through numerical results that the novel microstructured optical fiber with small normal group-velocity dispersion and nearly zero dispersion slope offers the possibility of efficient supercontinuum generation in the telecommunication window using a few ps pulses.
Abstract: We propose a new structure of highly nonlinear dispersion-flattened (HNDF) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with nonlinear coefficient as large as 30 W(-1)km(-1) at 1.55 microm designed by varying the diameters of the air-hole rings along the fiber radius. This innovative HNDF-PCF has a unique effective-index profile that can offer not only a large nonlinear coefficient but also flat dispersion slope and low leakage losses. It is shown through numerical results that the novel microstructured optical fiber with small normal group-velocity dispersion and nearly zero dispersion slope offers the possibility of efficient supercontinuum generation in the telecommunication window using a few ps pulses.

TL;DR: In this paper, a very fast electron injection from photoexcited dye molecules to the conduction band of TiO2 was reported, with an injection time τinj of 6 fs using transient absorption spectroscopy.
Abstract: Electron transfer from organic dye molecules to semiconductor−colloidal systems is among the fastest reported charge-separation reactions. We present investigations on alizarin complexing the surface of TiO2 semiconductor colloids in solution. Because of the very strong electronic coupling between the sensitizer and the semiconductor in the alizarin/TiO2 system, very fast electron injection from the photoexcited dye to the conduction band of TiO2 occurs. The real-time observation of the injection process is achieved by transient absorption spectroscopy using a 19-fs excitation pulse provided by a pump pulse from a noncollinear optical parametric amplifier and a probe pulse from a quasi-chirp-free supercontinuum. An injection time τinj of 6 fs can be unambiguously derived in three different ways from the experimental data: (i) analysis of individual transients at spectral positions without contributions from subsequent reactions (relaxation, recombination); (ii) global fitting procedure for 31 wavelengths...
