TL;DR: A brief overview of the basic concepts and important experimental observations of the effect of light localization near the surfaces of truncated periodic photonic structures can be found in this paper, where the authors discuss the formation of nonlinear localized modes and discrete surface solitons near the edges of non-linear optical waveguide arrays and two-dimensional photonic lattices and draw an analogy between the nonlinear surface optical modes and surface Tamm states known in the electronic theory.
Abstract: We present a brief overview of the basic concepts and important experimental observations of the effect of light localization near the surfaces of truncated periodic photonic structures In particular, we discuss the formation of nonlinear localized modes and discrete surface solitons near the edges of nonlinear optical waveguide arrays and two-dimensional photonic lattices We draw an analogy between the nonlinear surface optical modes and the surface Tamm states known in the electronic theory We discuss the crossover between discrete solitons in the array and surface solitons at the edge of the array by analyzing the families of even and odd nonlinear localized modes located at finite distances from the edge of a waveguide array We discuss various generalization of this concept including surface solitons in chirped lattices, multi-gap vector surface solitons, polychromatic surface states generated by a supercontinuum source, surface modes in two-dimensional photonic lattices, and spatiotemporal surface solitons Finally, we discuss briefly several other related concepts including the enhanced beaming of light from subwavelength waveguides in photonic crystals

TL;DR: The first stabilization of the frequency comb offset from a diode-pumped gigahertz solid-state laser oscillator is presented, and detailed insights into the CEO stabilization of this frequency comb are presented.
Abstract: We present the first stabilization of the frequency comb offset from a diode-pumped gigahertz solid-state laser oscillator. No additional external amplification and/or compression of the output pulses is required. The laser is reliably modelocked using a SESAM and is based on a diode-pumped Yb:CALGO gain crystal. It generates 1.7-W average output power and pulse durations as short as 64 fs at a pulse repetition rate of 1 GHz. We generate an octave-spanning supercontinuum in a highly nonlinear fiber and use the standard f-to-2f carrier-envelope offset (CEO) frequency fCEO detection method. As a pump source, we use a reliable and cost-efficient commercial diode laser. Its multi-spatial-mode beam profile leads to a relatively broad frequency comb offset beat signal, which nevertheless can be phase-locked by feedback to its current. Using improved electronics, we reached a feedback-loop-bandwidth of up to 300 kHz. A combination of digital and analog electronics is used to achieve a tight phase-lock of fCEO to an external microwave reference with a low in-loop residual integrated phase-noise of 744 mrad in an integration bandwidth of [1 Hz, 5 MHz]. An analysis of the laser noise and response functions is presented which gives detailed insights into the CEO stabilization of this frequency comb.

TL;DR: In this paper, a square-lattice photonic crystal fiber based on optofluidic infiltration technique is proposed for supercontinuum generation, without nano-scale variation in the geometry of the photonic fiber, ultra-flattened near zero dispersion centered about 1500 nm will be achieved.
Abstract: In this paper, a square-lattice photonic crystal fiber based on optofluidic infiltration technique is proposed for supercontinuum generation. Using this approach, without nano-scale variation in the geometry of the photonic crystal fiber, ultra-flattened near zero dispersion centered about 1500 nm will be achieved. By choosing the suitable refractive index of the liquid to infiltrate into the air-holes of the fiber, the supercontinuum will be generated for 50 fs input optical pulse of 1550 nm central wavelength with 20 kW peak power. We numerically demonstrate that this approach allows one to obtain more than two-octave spanning of supercontinuum from 800 to 2000 nm. The spectral slicing of this spectrum has also been proposed as a simple way to create multi-wavelength optical sources for dense wavelength division multiplexing.

TL;DR: This work generates supercontinuum (817-2250 nm at -30dB) in a dispersion-engineered silicon-rich nitride waveguide by pumping fs pulses with 82 pJ from an erbium-fiber oscillator.
Abstract: We experimentally show octave-spanning supercontinuum generation in a non-stoichiometric silicon-rich nitride waveguide when pumped by femtosecond pulses from an erbium fiber laser. The pulse energy and bandwidth are comparable to results achieved in stoichiometric silicon nitride waveguides, but our material platform is simpler to manufacture. We also observe wave-breaking supercontinuum generation by using orthogonal pumping in the same waveguide. Additional analysis reveals that the waveguide height is a powerful tuning parameter for generating mid-infrared dispersive waves while keeping the pump in the telecom band.

TL;DR: The generation of a broadband supercontinuum spanning from 1260 to 2200 nm using a 10 cm long As2Se3 chalcogenide (ChG) wire pumped at a wavelength of 1550 nm is reported.
Abstract: We report the generation of a broadband supercontinuum (SC) spanning from 1260 to 2200 nm using a 10 cm long As2Se3 chalcogenide (ChG) wire pumped at a wavelength of 1550 nm. Such a wide SC in As2Se3 is obtained by avoiding the effects of two-photon absorption normally observed at a wavelength of 1550 nm. For this purpose, the pump soliton is initially self-frequency shifted toward longer wavelength by means of the Raman effect in standard silica fiber before being launched into the ChG wire for spectral broadening.
